The Fountainhead
question
altruism - is it necessary?

the writer i.e. ayn rand talks about objectivism and advocates against altruism. yet we find ourself altruistic many a times. but after we read it, we want to be like howard roark which the writer never encouraged. so i am just confused. so i started reading another of her objectivism book, the atlas shrugged with hope that i will understand and feel the urge to whatever is good :)
If you want truth.., read Dickens. If you need an excuse to shed your humanity..., Rand can supply that for you. I hope you choose truth. :}
This is my first response to any thread on Goodreads. Please forgive me if I didn't follow protocol, but your headline made this irresistible. Personally, Ayn Rand, Objectivism and most/all of her ideologies are complete crap. To believe and indoctrinate a system of selfishness is irresponsible.
With that being said, I think that being altruistic is something we should strive to become. Unfortunately, I don't think that altruism exists in any way shape or form. Celebrities donating time or money do it for tax breaks and press coverage. Even if all you get is a good feeling then that wouldn't be altruism.
I could expand to a greater detail but I didn't want to write a dissertation. Thanks for the opportunity to write my thoughts. Have a great day.
