Debates on if it’s a good thing the DM feature is getting removed.

sometimes, for safety reasons you don’t want to give your online friends your email or aren’t allowed, plus it’s extremely inconvenient that way

pretty much ignorant
@poeSo when I’m being stalked and harassed in all my public chats, my pms where I can be safe with my friends and not have to publicly post my business for the world to see, I’m not allowed to have that?
@poe instead of goodreads taking away the dms, minors and others should just block the preds. pms are actually a good way I warn people about preds so a) the pred doesn’t see and come after me and b) to contact my friends directly so they see it as soon as possibleyou take away pms, you take away a way of warning people about preds and pedos
Poe ~castlevania era~ wrote: "you don't care you're being ignorant all of you"I feel like you’re definitely someone who doesn’t use goodreads for the social part of it and mainly tracks books so it isn’t affecting you. For me, this is my only social interaction I get. My closest friends are people on this app. I deserve to be able to privately talk to them
Please refrain from name calling and keep debates professional. This is seeming more so an argument than a debate.

Did you know you can build in a safety question for friend requests?
And that you can change your settings to receiving DMs only from your friends?
Isn’t that a good way to make sure you know who can DM you?
Removing someone from your friendlist should be sufficient, if they turn out to be unreliable, when you do those things….

and you think taking away DM's is going to make a difference. no GR are just ignoring us once again!

Love you too,my sweet friend💞
You can technically block people but that only means you won’t be notified when they comment Instead you’ll open a chat and be surprised with a slew of replies from that person. I know. I’ve experienced it

Yes,i get that she’s had to…..and she shouldn’t have had to!🫢
But taking away the possibility of DMs isn’t the solution…and taking the trouble to come up with a good solution isn’t going to happen either.
If GR did their job by taking down the ones we report to them, this wouldn’t have become such a mess
I do buddy reads using the DM feature. I don't like the Buddy Read group because usually the people that sign up to do the Buddy read hardly ever show up to do it. I've had several great buddy read partners on books that we select to read, that are in our to read lists. I hate to see this feature go away.

the point is most of the stuff that happens doesn't even take place in pms, it happens in public groups. I've never had creeps pm me, but you know what I have seen? pedos join groups and publicly chat and harass people. pms I think are actually safer because you can delete them and block people from messaging you, but you cant really stop people from commenting on public posts and stuff,

You’re the best!💞
My view on this is this is the only social media platform that I have and my only option. I can't talk to anyone else on any other platforms. The people at my school suck and just ignore my existence so I can here to make friends. DMs are the only reason I'm here today because people reached out after seeing posts I've posted to just be there for me and offer me a space to talk. If people want to abuse the DM feature then block and remove them from the site. Don't ruin a good thing for other people who honestly rely on the DM feature to get through their daily life.

I think that GoodReads has the right intention, especially with the example of predators attacking minors. I'm also sure this isn't the only reason that they have decided to take away this feature. Believe it or not, the ratio of yearly users vs yearly revenue is a large difference. According to https://growjo.com/company/Goodreads.com
the annual revenue is around 80M and they employ 432 workers with the average salary being $181,000. Thats $78,192,000 being payed to workers, leaving only 2M for problems, ads, and updates. For a company of that size with this kind of ownership, that is a very bad profit margin. People like to make fun of "Glitch reads", but that might be because the company cannot afford to make such grandiose software updates. I can understand why something like the private messages would be taken away from the features GoodReads has to offer.
However, if this is not the concern for the creators of GoodReads, then I find this new update to be extremely unpractical for users and quite useless. If the angle is a safety precaution for minors, then the creators are actually a little close-minded. Considering the amount of blacklash from the users of the app, I would think that GoodReads can find a way to still protect the younger users of the app, while still keeping the feature that many of its other users still love. I think that instead of leaving private messages open for anyone (or not even having it at all), it could be changed to a "friends only" feature. By having this, the minors are giving their consent to be approached by the people that they are friends with in an online forum, and this can be agreed to in the terms and conditions when first creating a profile on the app. This is a much better use of the update and keeps the minors safe, while also ensuring user satisfaction.
Removing DMs takes away one of the best parts of Goodreads — connecting directly with other readers. This decision really undermines the community aspect of the platform.
I love DMS, but I feel like thinking about it, I guess it makes sense why people wouldn't want them because of security reasons, but then couldn't GRS just make that an option in the profile? Like if you want to get dms or not?
I could see that, or out like if a person is under 18 on their profile maybe they can't send or receive messages. Like I know it's not a fool proof thing. Like I get why they would remove the ability to send photos or links, as annoying that is on its own

I don't think money is the issue here. I don't claim that I know what the problem with DM is, because I don't, but if we think for a moment about the amount of raw data that Amazon can "mine" from the feedback of about 150 million users (announced by Amazon in September 2023) and the fact that there are a direct link connecting Kindle (Amazon's reading device) Amazon, and Goodreads, I think it is aceptable to assume that Amazon is taking great profits from GR.
I'm with Nyshi, here! Just make the DM optional for each profile and improve the tools to report and block trolls or any other inappropriate behaviour.
What I can say about DM is that a group of friends use it to discuss books. I never received anything else but comments on anything we were discussing at any given moment.
I'll wait to see how it will work out if they really remove DM. Most likely, I'll leave the app.
