Absolutely not. this is my only form of social media and my ONLY way to get people to learn abt my fantasy book when I send out a poll asking if ppl wana read it. and to direct it's attraction to Wattpad. But beside that, it's my main reason I keep dm's open. I LOVE getting dm's abt ppl asking abt my written book or the ones ive read. Just now, I can think of 3 ppl who have messaged me jst to say they love my book taste and can just use my read as recs bcz I only read clean romance fantasy. Each time it made my day. how will I get that if they close dm's??

I'm gonna be the first to make this a hot take but as bad as I think it is I also think its good. like most sites that have a chat feature there are going to be predators that try to take advantage of and exploit minors who are also a majority of the community here on gr.. by removing pm's this stops preds from directly contacting minors and exploiting them privately. they have no way period to exploit so by removing the chat feature it keeps kids safe who also use Goodreads and chat with friends

Kids can already block people and close PMs, and creeps can still come on groups and harass people (it's happened dozens of times) and while yes I see what you mean about the private exploitation thing, I still think this isn't going to fix anything

exactly!! Removing pms is not helping because creeps are still in public groups and chats. If Goodreads really wanted to stop this then they should actually work on banning these people instead of removing our only way of private communication

I thinks its a good start in the right direction.. looking at the picture pastg Goodreads on platforms like Roblox and discord they don't really do anything to protect minors at all and I mean... the schlep situation. I still think getting rid of pm's is good while it is bad its like having pros and cons.. I think this is definitely something is a step in the right direction from companies like Amazon who have platforms like this. maybe its bad to you but it also could be good

that shouldn't be exactly a parents fault. just because it's their child doesn't make it THEIR responsibility. its called the predators who can't just not talk to children. even parents who have a bunch of parental guidance and control could not even be aware of their children being EXPLOITED BY PREDATORS. this isn't a punishment its them doing something that could work in a way.

like discord Goodreads has a blocked message feature you just choose to see their messages if they're blocked so if you don't view them it can't bother you bc they can't directly contact you and your not giving them the attention they want. you're ignoring them.

its like talking to a wall. by removing the chat feature. preds can't talk to children. are you not understanding what i'm saying your complaining about minors safety just as I am and making reports but when Goodreads does something that's actually BENEFICIAL we're being ungrateful and whiny as if their isn't any other platforms to move too to do the same purpose talk to friends.

really taking away the dms is a result of laziness on amazon’s part. they need to do their jobs better and actually investigate reported users. they’re taking the easy way out so they don’t have to do as much work while the rest of the community suffers bc of their lousy work ethic

yesss exactly! I’ve honestly never been dmd by any sort of creep at all, I’ve seen so many in groups and other public spaces on here, sure, but never in dms, and while I know it does happen, people can block people and set their dms to friends only

It’s an easy way to show they’re “doing something”,but predators will always find ways to approach new victims.
There already is a way for members to keep predators away….block them on their profile,and report them to GR as predator.
Then GR can remove them.
The problem probably is,that GR fails to do so…..

but Amazon is removing the pm's which is a good way to talk to minors if you're a predator so by doing that it gets rid of a chat feature that preds can use to exploit and abuse children without being caught by the public

uhh you don’t make sense 😭 they’re taking away an extremely important feature of goodreads, and with that making it way more difficult to contact your friends. also, it can be a safety thing as well. if a friend was possibly in danger and you dmd them, they’re much more likely to see the dm and answer than a group notification. And that could be literally life saving if the friend was planning to do something dangerous… so I do think dms matter a lot

But most pedos on here are in public groups and such, I’ve never had any experiences with them in dms and that’s rarer, plus it’s so so easy to block and report
