I think you're wasting time trying to find editions with more pages on your review thread. No offence, do you really need those extra hundred pages? Nope, cos obviously if Sharon continues then she'd be at 50k+ pages by the end of May

She could only give us 500 because of that.

message 404: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) The thing is more important than anything this is supposed to be fun, some people can read over 1000 pages in a day, I do find that believable, can I?? Probably not, but nobody is going to have fun if we can't trust each other! It also makes Sarah's job A lot more difficult, and that is really not fair to her, she put so much into this, let's help her out!

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Okay guys, I don't want this to cause arguments and it obviously is. I'll talk to Sharon and ask to hear her side of the story.

message 406: by Elizabeth Emily (last edited May 05, 2015 07:27AM) (new)

Elizabeth Emily Browne (snakesandladderrs) | 2186 comments We could help Sarah out even more by finishing the challenge here as the winner is obvious Berit ;) haha.

message 407: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Well let's not do that! I think what I'm trying to say is let's all be honest and are reviewing and posting, otherwise really what is the point, I can say I read a bunch of books I read back in high school and believe me they had a lot of pages, but fortunate for all of you I was in high school very long time ago :-) they weren't even called Spark notes back then ;-)

message 408: by Elizabeth Emily (new)

Elizabeth Emily Browne (snakesandladderrs) | 2186 comments Are spark notes just notes about the book?

message 409: by Noella (new)

Noella (kookiemonstar) | 3613 comments Thanks Sarah.

@Elizabeth
Ya summaries

message 410: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) They saved me and high school, I wasn't a big fan, and I'm still not of the classics!

message 411: by Christina (new)

Christina | 4293 comments They're great for Shakespeare! haha

I can't believe you used them Berit! :P

message 413: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackiegirl02) | 4452 comments That's an insane amount of reading! And classics at that. it is possible to read three books in a day but if the reviews are very vague then that seems kind of weird.

message 414: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Gosh, I would never have tried to get away with that! I read all my school books at least 4 times over ☺

Jackie wrote: "That's an insane amount of reading! And classics at that. it is possible to read three books in a day but if the reviews are very vague then that seems kind of weird."

I've been aiming for 3 a day over the past 4 days, but even reading short ones it is hard.

message 416: by Tati (new)

Tati I got away with it as well! Brazilian classics are just dull, and targeted at an audience older than high-schoolers

message 417: by Heather (new)

Heather | 10157 comments I have been reading a 3 Dayer now!

message 418: by onceuponatimeareview (last edited May 05, 2015 07:48AM) (new)

onceuponatimeareview | 2335 comments Its not impossible 12 books in four days is three books a day which isn't possible. I could do that if I didn't have school. I read fast and I know other people who could read fast. The whole part of this challenge is to have fun and not argue. Who cares who wins? I know last month we had a team member who read a crazy amount each day. That's not the point having fun and getting our tbrs down.

message 419: by Tati (new)

Tati It took me 4 days to read a 2,000 pages book! I was dying to get it over!

message 420: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Well in my defense, I wasn't exactly student of the year, I was very very social, just didn't have the time to read, I really didn't start reading a lot until my mid 20s.

message 421: by Abi (last edited May 05, 2015 07:49AM) (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments I hated the classics at school. I did not get on with Shakespeare at all.

message 422: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackiegirl02) | 4452 comments I use sparknotes all the time. I try and read the book when I just can't get into it especially for classics which is the only time I use it. then I have to use it to give me a clue as to what the old language is actually saying as it is kind of vague and hard to understand.

message 423: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackiegirl02) | 4452 comments Renee wrote: "To be fair, I read ahead for buddy reads, then save reviews and post my notes all at once. Of course those aren't 1000 page books lol."

That makes sense, but if you make status updates they aren't jumping 30% in one minute. :) I do the same thing when I'm in a buddy read and either just want to finish the book or it's really. good.:)I think everyone does that for buddy reads.

Irena BookDustMagic | 1344 comments I don't but that's just because I'm that girl who's trying to catch everyone in their reading process. I don't mind at all if others do that.

message 425: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Okay guys, I've spent hours on this, and this is what is going to happen.

1 - From now on poetry books will count for 1/3 of the page count stated, as the word count is so much lower than a regular book. So a 300 page poetry book will earn you 100 pages.

2 - Wherever possible, the page count for classics will be calculated using word counts, as those are more easily available for the classics.
Example:
Tess of the D'Urbervilles 148,382 words = 594 pages
Dracular 160,363 words = 641 pages
The Arabian Nights 111,112 words, = 455 pages

3. Big readers will be asked politely to go solo rather than joining a team, as it's really difficult for us to keep teams fair if one person is able to read 3 times as fast as the next fastest readers in the challenge.

4. As of right now, all page counts have been taken from the highest page count available. I will not be doing this again as it has taken me hours. Please list the highest page count you can find, this is important so that you don't lose your team points. If at a later date you want to change a page count, you will need to post the exact edition and page count that you want changed. Page counts from iphones/ipods are not accepted.

******************************************************

and in short
- Sharon will be participating as a solo participant, this is my decision not hers.
- finding the highest page count is now up to you. Please do not forget how important this is to your team and you!

Well Heather, I've spent hours sorting out this mess today, and this is the fairest way to do it. I have over 60 other participants to consider.

message 430: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments Poor Sarah has spent all day trying to make things fair for every one, but theres just no possible way she can make everyone happy.

Sorry if youre upset Heather, but she's tried her very best.

message 434: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments Exactly heather. Its not much of a challenge when one team is thousends of pages ahead in the first week, is it?

message 435: by Kim (new)

Kim (heyitskim) | 220 comments Abbie wrote: "Exactly heather. Its not much of a challenge when one team is thousends of pages ahead in the first week, is it?"

I agree with you,Abbie. At the end of this challenge, all of us are winners. :)

message 436: by Heather (new)

Heather | 10157 comments Setting the bar high for others gives a great challenge. I love this group and yall but this decision has made the team very upset.

message 437: by Heather (new)

Heather | 10157 comments Even with Sharon on our team I was pushing myself to read just as much as her.

message 438: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Heather wrote: "Do all teams have an equal number of participants?"

I just checked and I'm truly not trying to be a pest or making a big deal but both team Austen and also team Wilde has at least 1 member less than the others teams and team Steinbeck and team Alcott seem to have at least 2 or more than the rest. Of course some of these people might not have checked in though or are known slow readers. >.>

We work the teams out based on how many books have been read so far this year, so some teamss are going to have a few extra members, as other teams have faster readers.

message 441: by Heather (new)

Heather | 10157 comments If they take members away they should equal all the teams to the same amount of participants...

And I really appreciate that, truly. I'm not trying to be a pest. I'm just pointing out that you've now given at least team Austen and maybe team Wilde and unfair disadvantage.

message 443: by Heather (new)

Heather | 10157 comments So Sharon shouldn't have been moved from the team if others also have fast readers in them. Just trying to let you see where we are coming from here.

message 444: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments Heather wrote: "So Sharon shouldn't have been moved from the team if others also have fast readers in them. Just trying to let you see where we are coming from here."

Sharon was a lot faster than the fast readers. We truly try to make it fair as possible for eveyone Heather.

message 445: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 2404 comments Heather I suggest if you have a problem with the way 2 MODs of this group who arrange these challenges and make sure they run smoothly (volunteering mods might I add who give up there spare time to do this) so this group can flow and we can make new friends and discuss with others, then just don't participate?

Sarah and Abbie can I just for one say you do a fantastic job keeping the teams organised and you run these challenges for members to have fun even though you have lives outside of this forum and many others you make it easier for people like me to find others who like mindedly love books and reading and you give us a place to share that love passion and have fun.

message 446: by Heather (new)

Heather | 10157 comments I just would really like for yall to understand the disadvantage we are now in as well as Team Wilde. You are saying its to be fair to everyone but how is that fair to those two teams?

message 447: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) The thing is other fast readers have only read around 2000 pages, there is a huge discrepancy. I think maybe you need to take a breath and see where Sarah is coming from, and all the rest of us :-) let's have fun you guys are still in the game, for sure!

message 448: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments Honestly, with all trouble we've had with team challenges lately, we may have to go back to just having solo challenges, with the teamones every few months.
Its too much for us to spend whole days sorting this kind of stuff out. We dont get anything read ourselves, and we both have lives with people who depend on us.

message 449: by Heather (new)

Heather | 10157 comments I've always participated in these challenges and always will just extremely upset about the situation! I really enjoy this group.

Ah ok. I completely understand that now. I realize that's a very fair way to make the teams. Thank you for explaining. :)
