That was a really fantastic read, thx Rus - may want to reread that this year.

I also noticed that another Kate Morton book I just purchased on Audible has a photograph on the cover of the Audible version -

The Distant Hours by Kate Morton The Distant Hours

Thx for the note on the Audible cover of that other book, Kristie - I've been wanting to read DH forever and I've started it multiple times, but knew it needed a different mood. I 100% know I will love it and I think I'll slot that one in for my photograph task. :D

Margo | 11708 comments Kate is great for the snaps! I'm veering towards rereading The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton for the simple reson that, after a day scouring borrowbox, it's the only passable book I can find that fits the task!

They have lots of NF books with photos on but the problem is that they're all read by the authors, and those authors are poor readers!

message 103: by Laura (last edited Dec 02, 2025 10:00AM) (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3600 comments Good to know that, thanks Margo.

And I agree, most authors should never do the audio narration. I sometimes wonder how everyone involved in production lets it happen lol.

Joanne Harris is great though; I just listened to her read Vianne Vianne A Novel (Chocolat, #0) by Joanne Harris , the prequel to Chocolat, which she made even better than the print version imo.

Maybe 1% of authors are good narrators?

Ummmm - this cover does not show a photograph. It is a photograph but it does not SHOW a photograph. I tried to draw that distinction with the two covers I posted as examples.

Kristie | 19500 comments Viji wrote: "The general rules state "If reading a book in a language other than English, ."

Viji, sometimes when a book is translated the title changes so the version you read would have to have the same title as the English version.

The 'direct translation' means that if you are reading in a language other than English the word in the title needs to translate exactly to the word you are trying to find. It can't be mice for mouse or a loosely translated word that means something similar.

message 122: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60391 comments If the task requires a specific word in the title and you plan to read a book in a different language other than English, the translation of the word must be a direct translation. For example, if the word stipulated in the task was "hello", and you were going to read a book in French, a title with "bonjour" would be a direct translation of hello in French.

Hi Janice - trying to get clarification on your message #113.

Were you replying to my message #101?

I ask because, to me, that cover clearly shows a photograph, with a white border around it.

Just for reference, I also checked on Amazon search inside, and the first references to physical photographs in the book starts on p. 10 and there are 29 total references to them in the text, so it makes sense they're featuring one on the cover.

I guess I'm trying to understand what the difference is between these two covers. I would say that both show a photograph?

The Distant Hours by Kate Morton The Distant Hours

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton The Forgotten Garden

TIA

It can be an explosion caused by a number of factors and not excluded to a bomb.

That cover looks like it would qualify.

Yes, I was replying to your message #101. The problem was that the link to the title and the link to the cover went to two different editions. One showed a photograph and one was a photograph. I followed the link to the wrong edition.

Sorry, I should have worded my query differently. Instead of asking whether it would fit the 'explosion' task, I mentioned 'bomb blast'. I have been looking at many of my books with explosions caused by bombs and that stuck in my mind!!

Laura (apenandzen) | 3600 comments Sorry for the confusion on the links I posted before, Janice and thx for the clarification.

Question: re the second task under Hydra, an animal with a distinctive tail on the cover - are you looking for a specific distinctive tail, like a cat who just got scared and it bushes out?

Or can it just be a cat with the tail showing?

That would certainly be a distinctive tail. Think full, luxurious, something the animal would be proud to show off. Maybe something that makes you sit up and take note. Does that help? LOL!

This is what I've slotted for that task:
The Man Who Died Twice (Thursday Murder Club, #2) by Richard Osman

The dark cover puts the tail in contrast and the white tip of the full tail gives it a bit of distinction.

Compare to which is full but unremarkable.
The Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky

Carrie (cseydel) | 265 comments Hi Janice, thanks for your patience with all of our questions. I would like to read DUNE for orange, but tineye is labeling the cover as red. What do you think?

Dune (Dune #1) by Frank Herbert https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Janice (jamasc) | 60391 comments I've been gophering for Virgo and ran into a stumbling block. There aren't many options for books set in October. So I've broadened the task.

Read a book set in October or has "October" in the title.

Alexandra (alex2911) | 776 comments I am sorry to bother again, Janice, but would this one count as photograph:
Thomas Mann Ein Leben by Tilmann Lahme ?
Its definitely a photograph on the cover but without a frame. Maybe this way I could finally tackle this 600 page biography that I so optimistically bought and that I tend to ignore now 🙈

message 145: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19500 comments Alexandra - I think the distinction Janice is trying to make is that the photograph has to look like you could pick it up. It doesn't have to be in a frame, but it needs to have edges around it so it looks like a photograph someone could hand you, not just a photograph on the cover.

Kristie has a great way to explain the concept. Your cover doesn't show an object that is a photograph, one you'd paste into a photo album.

There is a task in Aquarius that asks for a biography or memoir.
