SOLVED. Historical romance about an assassin who kidnapped a princess as a baby [s]

So, I read this book just a few years ago, maybe 5 at the most and I really want to re-read it but cannot remember either author or name.

I've looked through all my books, genres, lists etc I can think of but still couldn't find it.


I actually remember the whole plot about the book, but not the name, which is sad, so here's the "short" version of the plot:

The book is a historical romance about a princess in a made up country who was kidnapped as a baby by the assassin who was hired to kill her, but he couldn't do it, so instead he took her with him.

I think the assassins name was Leopold or such and after his family died he decided to become a criminal and eventually an assassin.
This time he was hired to kill the baby princess, but he couldn't do it, so instead took her with him and eventually fled to England where he raised her.

He managed to get into the nursery by seducing princess nanny and after the nanny realized that her royal charge was kidnapped she lied and said that the kidnapped child was actually her baby daughter not the princess and they believed, but about 5 years later the "princess" died anyway (I think it was assassination) because she was the kings only child (the queen was murdered soon after princess birth).

So, it was believed that the princess was dead, but people weren't sure about it so over the years there were many "princesses" who claimed to be the kings daughter.

The assassin didn't know about the switched princesses and had sent the king a letter telling that the princess is with him and safe and told that he would return her when she was safe from his enemies, they all had been killed.

So, many years later, Leo (the assassin) told the real princess truth about her & sent her to her home, to be reclaim her position as princess, but the king believed her to be dead and with all the other impostors the kings guard captain (the hero & love interest) was ordered by the king to figure out who hired her etc.

By then the king had married for the 2nd time and his new queen was pregnant, but because of the stress and importance of having to give birth to the heir, she had previous miscarriages and therefore now it was very important for her to have the child.

Obviously the kings guard captain didn't believe the princess that she really is the one, and also slept with her, to seduce the truth from her, of course, but eventually he realized that she was telling the truth, since she had proof (a bracelet a believe) & the nurses story among other things and he led her to the king who, upon seeing her recognized her, because she looks exactly like her mother.

Stuff happened but in the end princess and the kings guard captain got married (he was a noble to begin with), and the grandma who wanted back the throne for her family (her husband or such was king before, but was overthrown, so she wanted the current one dead) got found out.
