Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 327 comments Thanks, Ginger, and you made some good points. I'm going to have to just roll with it in this series, I think. I will listen to you and put on my Jason Statham movie hat while reading.😆😜

Just a few thoughts..

SK describes Roland’s world as being a stereotype of a Western, I think it was at the beginning of this book somewhere? So I think it’s like he’s having fun playing with spaghetti western tropes (almost like fan fiction) but he also gets to add whatever else his imagination cunjures up.

Being King, we get fantasy elements (Gilead), sorcery, horrible monsters, blood, guts and whatever else he feels like throwing at us.
I’m pretty sure he is fully aware that he’s stretching what we’re prepared to believe in.. which somehow makes it ok. He knows that I know and I know that he knows, so it’s good.

He does it in many (all?) of his books I think. I mean, he can start with a fog bank on a normal evening that is suddenly, somehow full of hellish monsters, or he invents a car that can get jealous, or a small town with vampires in the walls.

I think he’s having a ball and taking us along for the ride no holds barred.

Yes, I’ve read the series through. I bought the first book because I saw it at a local bookshop and like SK. I also got the second book, because I was hungry for a series and the first one looked too thin!

I didn’t really enjoy The Gunslinger and only started the second because I already had it.. At the end of this volume, I needed to read the series.

Glad you’re having fun so far.

Annerlee | 82 comments Just finished up. This book really sucked me into its world and I really enjoyed the experience. Looking forward to the next one.

Terry | 506 comments Awesome, I think we all felt pretty similarly about this one. It definitely does a good job of expanding what started in the Gunslinger, and I loved the twists and turns I didn't see coming.

I definitely don't disagree about the suspension of belief here, these books maybe a little more than Sk's usual, but still good.

Look forward to sharing with book 3!

No, I didn't think you said anything too much or too far. I can definitely tell you know a lot about what's going on, and I enjoyed reading your perspectives.

I hope with the next book that you'll be able to role with it more. I like what Krystal said in the spoiler above.

It's kind of like being in a (view spoiler) Vickie! LMAO

Perfect way to put it Krystal and thanks for adding that!

I'm glad you enjoyed the re-read Annerlee! Was it just as good this time as last?

We're thinking about reading the next book, The Wastelands at the beginning of January. With the holiday seasons and a few of us (definitely me) having a full load of reading in December, I hope that works for you and everyone else.

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 327 comments LOL, Ginger, I will keep that in mind. 😂🤣😂 And, yes, thanks Krystal, good perspective.😊

First of January works good for me. It will be a busy December!

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 327 comments Yep, good for me as well.😊

Annerlee | 82 comments Sounds good to me too.

Different. The first time, I wanted to know what happened so was focused on the narrative and readung quite quickly. This time, I slowed down and got a more rounded impression. I noticed more and got more out of it. I did really appreciate Eddie’s character and wise cracks.
