* Description: Description Electric or gasoline, chickpeas or beef, train or plane? The climate debate has split the public into two camps. One side speaks passionately about personal responsibility and moral duty, while the other feels shamed and drawn toward right-wing climate skepticism. Living sustainably and making the “right” consumer choices often demands resources that the poorest simply don’t have.
If we want to move beyond this deadlock, we must start thinking about climate and class together. That means focusing on how inequalities in power and income shape the climate crisis — also in Denmark. Data show that the wealthiest segment of society emits far more CO₂ per person than the poorest. The way forward, argue Stahl, Ellersgaard, and Mulvad, is a struggle over distribution rather than culture — a new climate politics that benefits the many, not the few.
About the authors Rune Møller Stahl (b. 1982) is a political economist and holds a PhD in political science. He works as a senior analyst at Oxfam Denmark, focusing on global economic inequality. He is also the author of The History of Economic Theory and An Introduction to Piketty: Inequality, Justice, and Democracy.
Christoph Houman Ellersgaard (b. 1981) holds a PhD in sociology. He is an associate professor at Copenhagen Business School, researching elites and power. He is the co-author of The Power Elite and People Pass Away, Power Remains.
Andreas Møller Mulvad (b. 1983) is a sociologist with a PhD in political science. His research has explored the relationship between class and democracy in both China and Scandinavia. Together with Christoph, he co-authored Tame the Elite.
