t's now time to get ready to vote for our next set of prompts! The thread will be open for at least 24 hours before the poll gets posted. This is a good opportunity to ask any question you may have regarding the prompts, do some research, or ask for recommendations.

Voting will open in the morning of October 12 and results will be posted in the morning of October 16 (CST time).

As a reminder, there are 50 prompts already, so only the top 2 prompts will get through this time.

How it works:

- When the voting opens, follow the link to the mini-poll that will be added at the end of this post
- You have a total of 8 votes this poll to spread across your favorite and least favorite prompts (you can also use less than 8 votes)
- You can find examples of acceptable voting practices on the Introduction Thread
- The prompts with the more favorable votes (comparing top votes to bottom votes, and looking at the overall number of votes it received) will be added to the final list

We are asking people to include their Goodreads profile address when they vote. To find this, just go to your own profile and then copy the URL/web address. If for some reason you can't link to your Goodreads profile, please post your full Goodreads name with enough identifiable information that we'll be able to access your profile.

Poll Prompts:
1. A book with this, that, these or those in the title
2. A book with a character who isn’t alive
3. An Award Winning Book
4. A "cozy" book
5. A book related to performance
6. A book connected to a Time's person of the year
7. A page turner
8. A book with a love story
9. A book from any widely recognised list of your choice
10. A book where the main character is experiencing a transition
11. A book that features a chef or baker
12. A book about a social, political, or environmental issue you care about.
13. A book featuring a holiday that you don't celebrate
14. A book read by another ATY member in 2026
15. A book with a challenge or competition, such as a marathon, contest, or campaign

Feel free to discuss the prompts below, but please remember to be respectful to the other group members.

Driven by a dead character’s memory

3.. An Award Winning Book
Your choice of award, genre, year, language, country.

https://www.goodreads.com/list/tag/pr...
https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/2...

List of awards by genre, type and country:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

4. A “cozy” book
Could be a cozy subgenre (cozy fantasy, cozy mystery), about an activity you consider cozy (eg crafting) or in a cozy setting.

5. A book related to performance
Performing arts - acting, music, theatre, films, Broadway musicals, concerts, movies, videos, voice acting.

Social media “performance”- a character’s online persona, social media influencers, role playing, videos, content creation, catfishing.

Performance in life - job performance, sports performance, playing different roles at home vs work, impression management, pretending, “fake it till you make it.”

6. A book connected to a Time's person of the year
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Pe...

The list includes:
the personal computer, you, scientists, the endangered earth, journalists (the guardians), silence breakers, the protester, baby boomers

7. A page turner
A book you can’t put down, because the pages are almost turning themselves!

Listopias: (I tried to pick lists that had more than just a few books, but also not such a large amount that it would be impossible to scan the list!)

Non-Fiction Page Turners: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Page Turner: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...
Intensely Readable Novels:https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Books You Will Want To Read in One Sitting:https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3...
Best Thrillers: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...

I think these Lists offer a variety of genres, not just Thrillers (which is what I had though dominated this idea before I started looking around). Most likely, if this gets voted in I will pick a book that sounds exciting to me, and maybe mentions “page-turner” in the Goodreads Book Description

8. A book with a love story
This could be a romance, or any loving relationship, such as love for children, relatives, friends, found families.

9. A book from any widely recognised list of your choice
Examples include the Booker, the Hugo, New York Times, Sunday Times (other newspapers are available), Rory Gilmore, PEN translation prize, banned books list, Diverse Books award and yes, the ATY list.

10. A book where the main character is experiencing a transition
This could be a new job or leaving an old one. Starting at a new school. Getting married or divorced. A trans person who is coming out, or undergoing gender-affirming surgery. Et cetera

11. A book that features a chef or baker
This could include a fiction book with a character who is a chef or baker, or a nonfiction book by or about a professional chef or baker.

Chef book lists

Edie | 1151 comments In addition to the thoughts listed above, a book with "a character who isn't alive" could include historical fiction with a character who died some time ago and biographies of deceased folk. This seems pretty wide open.

message 6: by Samantha (last edited Oct 11, 2025 11:05AM) (new)

Samantha | 1593 comments I am happy that we have one last go with prompts, I am more excited for these than our last round.

1. A book with this, that, these or those in the title - has potential but not sure I have enough votes to include it.
2. A book with a character who isn’t alive - Unsure I am not sure I read enough books that would fit but it might be fun to see what is out there. I recently read a book with epilepsy as a character and that was the best part of the book.
3. An Award Winning Book - neutral, easy to fill but won't vote either way for it.
4. A "cozy" book - Potential down - I feel like I should enjoys these books more but I think I like a little more grit. I also don't know that I give them much of chance, maybe this is a good opportunity.
5. A book related to performance - I need to think about this one but potential for an upvote. I like that it has a mixture of meanings.
6. A book connected to a Time's person of the year - Potentially down; mostly because I would need to scroll through lists to find something and that sounds tedious.
7. A page turner - Down, I have no idea how I would know this ahead of time. Books I think are going to be great are often my biggest disappointments.
8. A book with a love story - neutral- this is easy so many books even murder mystery's have a romance.
9. A book from any widely recognized list of your choice - neutral- lists generally bore me but I do like our best book of the month lists.
10. A book where the main character is experiencing a transition - Upvote, I like a lot.
11. A book that features a chef or baker - I like this but think it will end up being neutral.
12. A book about a social, political, or environmental issue you care about. - I read a lot papers and articles that would fit but don't think I want to read a full book that would fit right now so most likely down.
13. A book featuring a holiday that you don't celebrate - I like this and if I have enough votes it could be an upvote.
14. A book read by another ATY member in 2026 - Upvote, I like this, I often pick up books that I see on the best book of the month list or in other discussions.
15. A book with a challenge or competition, such as a marathon, contest, or campaign - Upvote, I like the variety but it still has limitations.

Dixie (dixietenny) | 1311 comments Some thoughts:
1. this, that, these, those: I put these words into My Books and came up with 58 options on my shelves. That doesn't mean I'll vote for it; my votes always go first to prompts that resonate with me, not just prompts I know I can fill. But if it gets it I'm spoiled for choice.
3. and 9. an award-winning book and from the list of your choice: clever. Now someone will say those categories are too broad, after every individual award and list suggestion but one has already been downvoted.
6. connected to Time's Person of the Year: an insane number of options, and "connected" lets you take this anywhere you want to go (although KIS and BIO ALWAYS perform that function, as I mentioned earlier in discussion.). It's worth clicking on the link and scrolling down a bit just to look at all the magazine covers.
11. features chef or baker. My ex-husband is a chef. Not going there.
12. read about a social, political, or environmental issue you care about. My suggestion. I'm hoping this might give something to all of us who wanted more timely topics to read about. Obviously there are endless fiction options too. I could provide lists but I'm not going to. Either this resonates with you or it doesn't.
14. read by a ATY member in 2026, A good incentive to follow the BOTM discussions as they happen next year, though anything mentioned as read by an ATY member anywhere would work for this.

message 8: by Angie (last edited Oct 11, 2025 02:59PM) (new)

Angie | 92 comments My initial thoughts:

1. A book with this, that, these or those in the title Neutral to maybe.
2. A book with a character who isn’t alive This one intrigues me. Possible upvote.
3. An Award Winning Book We have no awards-based prompt, so I will upvote this. I'll probably do something from the Hugos or the GR Awards.
4. A "cozy" book I like cozy mysteries, so this is an easy upvote for me. It would be a good "comfort read" book--the genre you read when you're down.
5. A book related to performance I would have preferred a bit more specificity (like related to Broadway or something), but I guess we can't get those sorts of things through anymore. It's a maybe.
6. A book connected to a Time's person of the year I looked at the list, and it's a no..
7. A page turner How do I know before I've read it?
8. A book with a love story Neutral.
9. A book from any widely recognized list of your choice Neutral. But I wanted another list prompt, so...
10. A book where the main character is experiencing a transition Neutral. I have to research it.
11. A book that features a chef or baker Maybe. I'll have to see what's out there.
12. A book about a social, political, or environmental issue you care about. As of now, it's neutral.
13. A book featuring a holiday that you don't celebrate Definite upvote.
14. A book read by another ATY member in 2026 My only issue is that it is specifically tied to 2026, which means I can't plan for it.
15. A book with a challenge or competition, such as a marathon, contest, or campaign A strong maybe.

First thoughts

1. A book with this, that, these or those in the title - it seems late for word title prompts. On the other hand, I can search lists that fit my favorite topics that didn’t get in. Maybe
2. A book with a character who isn’t alive - I like it. I’d go for a sentimental vroom, not vampires.
3. An Award Winning Book - yes, this one is really important to me. I found some of the best books in my life on awards lists.
4. A "cozy" book - I haven’t had good luck with these lately. Too saccharine sweet.
5. A book related to performance - I like this a lot. The 3 interpretations are all interesting to me.
6. A book connected to a Time's person of the year - I’m sure to find an interesting topic here (despite some disagreeable choices.)
7. A page turner - I need a good fast paced book once in a while. These are easy to identify, but i prefer to read one after it’s been out a year or so.
8. A book with a love story - I always read a romance in june, but they’re easy to fit in elsewhere.
9. A book from any widely recognised list of your choice -yes! I’m disappointed that the list haters dominated the voting this year. I hate cover prompts but I always leave them neutral because I know we need a good variety on the list.
10. A book where the main character is experiencing a transition - yes I have several on my tbr.
11. A book that features a chef or baker -No, we already have a food related book. (I had 2 this year in another challenge, and I don’t need to think about food.)
12. A book about a social, political, or environmental issue you care about. - yes, but I know how this will go.
13. A book featuring a holiday that you don't celebrate - i like reading about other cultures, but holiday themed books can be really silly.
14. A book read by another ATY member in 2026 - yes, I rely on recommendations to help me find the better books. (They could help with #13.)
15. A book with a challenge or competition, such as a marathon, contest, or campaign - yes this is the only one left with a 2026 connection.

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments First impressions:

1. A book with this, that, these or those in the title - Maybe! It's a prompt I've never seen before so could be a fun scavenger hunt

2. A book with a character who isn’t alive - Very likely an upvote, especially since it's not limited to the main character. I like that there's a few ways to interpret it (ie. afterlife, ghost, undead creatures like zombies or vampires)

3. An Award Winning Book - Likely a downvote. I have no interest at all in awards nor do I follow any other than the Goodreads Choice Awards

4. A "cozy" book - Very likely an upvote! There's been such a trend the past few years with cozy fantasy, cozy mysteries, etc. and I have a ton on my TBR

5. A book related to performance - Completely indifferent to this one

6. A book connected to a Time's person of the year - Downvote. I have no interest in the Person of the Year selections and they've had some very dubious choices

7. A page turner - Maybe? But I like to plan ahead and I feel like this is hard to tell until you've read it. I could pick a book known to be/described as a page turner, maybe

8. A book with a love story - It's a bit of a freebie, but I really like this one. It's a good excuse to fit in a romance, but also does not *have* to be a romance

9. A book from any widely recognised list of your choice - Too vague for me. I don't like list prompts generally, but if we're going to have one, I'd rather a defined list than something this open

10. A book where the main character is experiencing a transition - Maybe. I have a lot of thrillers about people moving to a new town to start over that might work here

11. A book that features a chef or baker - I have some books that would fit, but not invested in it strongly enough that I'd vote for it

12. A book about a social, political, or environmental issue you care about - Another maybe. I definitely have books that fit, but not sure I feel that strongly about it

13. A book featuring a holiday that you don't celebrate - Possibly a downvote. I'm burnt out on holiday-themed prompts. I'm also not a huge fan of holiday books in general

14. A book read by another ATY member in 2026 - Downvote. I'm finding it harder and harder each year to keep up with the group every year (except for the voting process!) so I'm not likely to actively keep up with what anyone is reading. I also don't love picking my books based on someone else's reading habits

15. A book with a challenge or competition, such as a marathon, contest, or campaign - Love this! Definitely an upvote

I was thinking Guy Fawkes too- there are lots of good books that take then for some reason. There's a big scene in a Cormoran Strike book-- I think a victim is in one of the bonfire pyres or something?

I love this prompt. There's so many choices that can go in different directions and opportunities to learn things.

Martha (marthag503) | 525 comments There were some good prompts this poll but I'm thinking I'll probably only vote 4 up and leave it at that. I don't know if any of my votes will make the list, I tend to like book awards and lists and books about issues I care about, so I'm hoping, as often happens, that we'll see some ignored prompts make it into next year's seasonal challenges and readathons. I'm looking forward to a completed list!

I usually upvote 6 -8, but I’m trying to narrow down my choices. Like you, I like book awards and issues I can care about. I also really like the performance prompt for music, theater, and the other interpretations. ( Interpretation#3 would even have career applications for some.). I like a few others including page turners (which I think are easy to find here.)

I think I might focus on the awards prompt with the hope that everyone should be able to find an award that will fit their tastes. What are the odds that the list haters will give us a break?

I hope when the results are out we will have a list with great variety for everyone, with all types of prompts represented. I love that we have a democratic process and I enjoyed being a part of it. Now I’ll need to catch up on my reading!

Chrissie (haru_ran) | 83 comments First thoughts:

1. A book with this, that, these or those in the title
Not exciting to me, but doable enough.
2. A book with a character who isn’t alive
This has a lot of potential.
3. An Award Winning Book
I like the openness of this one.
4. A "cozy" book
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand the frothy one that got in, isn't that cozy as well?
5. A book related to performance
Neutral.
6. A book connected to a Time's person of the year
My initial thought was 'ugh, why?' but that list has actually some potential.
7. A page turner
Easily doable.
8. A book with a love story
Easily doable.
9. A book from any widely recognised list of your choice
I actuall like the openness of this one.
10. A book where the main character is experiencing a transition
Like this one as well.
11. A book that features a chef or baker
Neutral.
12. A book about a social, political, or environmental issue you care about.
Has potential, neutral for now.
13. A book featuring a holiday that you don't celebrate
Neutral.
14. A book read by another ATY member in 2026
I actually like the sound of this one.
15. A book with a challenge or competition, such as a marathon, contest, or campaign
Neutral.

LeahS | 1417 comments 1. A book with this, that, these or those in the title
Doable but I don't like it enough to upvote.

2. A book with a character who isn’t alive
This has a lot of possibilities

3. An Award Winning Book
I would be happy with this.

4. A "cozy" book
We have 'comfort read' this year, and I never like these sort of prompts.

5. A book related to performance
I like this one

6. A book connected to a Time's person of the year
Doesn't appeal

7. A page turner
Any thriller, mystery and keep your fingers crossed that it is a page turner. Don't think so.

8. A book with a love story
Neutral

9. A book from any widely recognised list of your choice
I suggested it so I'd better upvote it!

10. A book where the main character is experiencing a transition
Interesting

11. A book that features a chef or baker
Not for me.

12. A book about a social, political, or environmental issue you care about.
Fine, but I've already planned books on these sorts of subjects. Neutral.

13. A book featuring a holiday that you don't celebrate
One that keeps cropping up - better than a holiday you do celebrate, but still neutral

14. A book read by another ATY member in 2026
I like that this gives a wider choice than just Best Books, but is still not too wide.

15. A book with a challenge or competition, such as a marathon, contest, or campaign
I like the 26 link with marathon, but I don't want to read a book about a marathon, and the others don't appeal much.

I'm tempted to upvote all the 'book choice' suggestions, but that might mean none get in. Again, a lot that I am neutral about, nothing I really dislike on sight.

I'm with you-- I might do only less. Only two are getting through. The ones "I'm fine" with, I won't vote for, I'm only voting for ones I love and don't want to see. I don't want to risk two things I'm just ok with getting through.

Are you familiar with A Night in the Lonesome October? I often read it leading up to Halloween because I find it delightful, in a slightly macabre way (appropriately enough!). Definitely fits "light, short, and funny" for me.

An excellent point. This vote is different from our previous ones: only two can get through.

I upvoted Awards and an issue you care about, and used my other six to downvote.

Jillian | 2943 comments Dixie, with only two being able to get through voting was definitely different for me. My planning stage went from 6/2 to 2/2 to 2/6 and then once I got into voting I went 3/5.

What made it hard was that I don’t really dislike any of the prompts this round.

Are you familiar with [book:A N..."

I'm doing the Clue/Cluedo challenge that someone (Tracy,Robin P, Nancy???) posted about during earlier rounds. I'm going to use this book for those prompts.

Hopefully the fireworks on the voting form indicate celebration of our list being complete!

Angie | 92 comments I went 3/5. I thought about 2/6, but there were three I really like, so I figured I'd vote for all of them.

That was my inspiration. Otherwise the bats will be back if I'm doing it- cause I love those bats.

Edie | 1151 comments 3/5 for me too. It is hard to downvote prompts that you are fine with, but I chose ones that might have support to help my favorites get through.
Please let there be 2 winners. It is time for voting to be DONE.

Ha, ha, every year we can't wait to start and then we can't wait to be done! (including me)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3855 comments 3/5 also. There were a few that felt too broad for me.

Me as well. For some people it’s a problem of being too specific, but the any award or any list might as well be a freebie.

The last few polls are bittersweet. When the list making is over I spend the last months of the year impatiently waiting for the year to roll over.

First message says that Results are Oct 15 (Wednesday), but the calendar says they will be Oct 16 (Thursday). Are we cutting short since it's the last poll, or is this just a typo?

Typo! Should be Friday.

I'll change- can't read that calendar! But the calendar does say Wed,,,, three days of voting,, with results Thursday?

message 43: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 3239 comments Yes Pamela - I see a Thursday as Results, not Friday.

Oh yea I was thinking results Friday. Voting closes Thursday evening.

Tracy | 3239 comments Pretty sure it says Poll 18 poll closes Wednesday and results are Thursday.

Are you still looking at Poll 17 Emily? Your eyes must be crossed after the past several months 🥰

I'm just going to go hide in my hole lol ignore me and my 3 brain cells that haven't been eaten by the baby in my belly.

message 47: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 3239 comments Oh no Emily! We love however many brain cells your baby has left for your own use. And it’s not like forgetting it’s October - this week’s poll number is pretty random. 🥰

Dixie (dixietenny) | 1311 comments Yes, voting closes Wednesday night, results Thursday morning. May they be the last!

Emily, I've been through it too, including the always popular, brilliance-enhancing combo of having two less than two years apart. You're an absolute wonder to be doing this at all. Don't worry about things like days and dates, you put together a good schedule to start with and we'll help you as needed.

You at least have a baby as an excuse....I'll go fix the date!

message 50: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 925 comments First impressions:

1. A book with this, that, these or those in the title
- I kind of like this one! Not too easy and not too difficult.

2. A book with a character who isn’t alive
- Likely upvote. I like that it opens it up to characters like Death.

3. An Award Winning Book
- I don't love when I have to look up each book on my TBR individually to see if it fits a prompt. I'll have to do some research to see roughly how many options I'd have for this but I think it might be too broad for my tastes.

4. A "cozy" book
- Neutral

5. A book related to performance
- Downvote. This reminds me of the dancing/singing/acting/art prompt we have this year which I struggled with.

6. A book connected to a Time's person of the year
- I looked up the list and it's going to be a downvote for me even though I like the idea of the prompt.

7. A page turner
- I don't love this because I'm a planner and there's no way for me to know what will work. I also consider very few books to be page turners so I might go the year without reading one. Likely downvote.

8. A book with a love story
- I prefer the wording from our 2021 challenge ("a love story") because "a book with a love story" is a lot more broad but I think romance-related prompts are underrepresented (and I love romances) so probably an upvote for me.

9. A book from any widely recognised list of your choice
- I dislike lists so likely downvote

10. A book where the main character is experiencing a transition
- Looked at the examples and I think every fiction book I've read would count so it's too broad for me

11. A book that features a chef or baker
- Neutral. Probably a bit challenging but not one I've done before.

12. A book about a social, political, or environmental issue you care about.
- Neutral

13. A book featuring a holiday that you don't celebrate
- Neutral. Might be challenging since not a lot of books are holiday-centered and it's hard to know if a specific holiday will come up over the course of the book

14. A book read by another ATY member in 2026
- Neutral

15. A book with a challenge or competition, such as a marathon, contest, or campaign
- I like this but would prefer the wording to just be "A book with a competition" since challenge opens it up to pretty much all books
