SOLVED. Old Adult novel with different versions of a woman's life and death

I believe I read the book somewhere between 1990 and 2010. It might have been written much earlier but I'm not sure. What I remember most clearly is that different chapters described different versions of a woman's life and death. There was the underlying idea of the inevitability of (early) death. There was a poignant, final sentence to end each such chapter, something along the lines of "And darkness fell". I'm not sure about the exact wording though.
