* Description: Su Shih, better known by his literary name, Su Tung-p'o is the greatest poet of the Sung dynasty (960-1279). The people of the Sung had a way of life, values, and interests which have much in common with the modern Western man. Consequently, Sung poetry seems to the Western reader of today very similar to that of his contemporaries. Though less intense and brilliant than the poetry of the T'ang, it is broader in scope and of greater philosophic depth and complexity. To the gentleman of the Sung, no theme was in itself unpoetic. Metaphor was added to metaphor until the poet was satisfied that he had fully expressed himself. And poetry was for him a part of everyday life, the normal medium of communication for his thoughts and feelings.

The poetry of Su Tung-p'o reflects both the outer and the inner aspects of his life. A provincial official, now in, now out, of favor with the government, he led a migratory life which is described in many of his poems. A painter and calligrapher of distinction, he saw with a painter's eye, and in his poems painted with words. A philosopher in whose thought Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism met, he infused his poetry with these beliefs, especially the latter two. Almost every traditional Chinese form is represented in his writing.
