question of the week: How does Manderley itself function almost like a character in the story? What role does the setting play in shaping the narrator’s feelings?

I find the description of the grounds so beautifully written. I feel the building itself to be a cold oppressive monster in contrast to the enchanting gardens, trails, forest, sea coves, etc. I envision a mausoleum housing the dead with the beautiful natural surroundings providing an escape.
