College Romance book. The main characters meet and are into each other. He ends up dating a friend. The eventually get together but there is a death in her family.

I'm looking for a college romance book I read within the last year (not sure when it was published). In it, the main characters meet at her dorm and have an instant connection. Somehow he ends up dating a friend (maybe her roommate). There is a birthday celebration where she makes him something special and the girl he is dating gives him tickets to an event. He and the other girl end up not seeing each other anymore/breaking up, and then the main characters spend the night together. In the morning, she finds out someone in her family has died and leaves immediately to go home.

It's in dual POV and if I recall correctly there is back and forth with the time frame.

Thanks for any suggestions! I've gone through all my lists and not able to find it. Hopefully it wasn't some fan fiction I came across or something. :)
