SciFi about lucid visions of a future life in California post-apocalypse. Presented as if real; written by a prof in a Sacramento area community college. Read in the early 1990s.

The author presents this story as if he had future-life altered states of consciousness. Set several thousand years in the future after technology collapses.

The main character is sent on a mission by his tribe to connect with a tribe to the north; he encounters a large predator cat that has evolved to a large size. He and his tribe have also evolved to be much taller.

Must have been written in the late 80s or early 90s. I believe the author lectured at either Cosumnes Community College or American River Communit College.

I wonder if the Sac Public Library system would have some record? They try to shelve books by local authors, and I seem to recall (when I lived there) that the books got a sticker indicating local author.
