Yes, as described in the rules :P

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13002 comments Sorry, I read through but must have missed it.

I'm afraid I'll have to pass again in that case. I signed up for turf wars with a LOT of books, and as such will mostly be 100-200 pagers. I would feel bad dragging my team down (and the idea of only signing up with one book a month doesn't fill me with joy either, lol), so I'll save myself the misery.

I once again really, really wish that Turf ran alongside UNO instead. it's a far more sensible fit! lol.

It was in the second post. I split the rules because it was a bit long and were close to the max character count when it was all together.

Boo! We'll miss you but important to know your limits

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6537 comments Woohoo, signed up! I usually like doing to capt or co-capt, but this round due to multiple team challenges and being busier end of the year, I'll be a regular reader/cheerleader.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13002 comments I'll come and play again some other time. I just know from previous years trying to do a "team who reads the chunkiest books wins" challenge alongside turf will suck the fun out of both for me and make me miserable, so gonna have to avoid that. And as turf is already running, I'm afraid that means wheels is out 😭

Now I just need to figure out what to do with all these awkward letter books I've been saving up 😂

Nobody's forcing you to read chunksters every single time. You are only putting pressure on yourself thinking you have to do this. Shorter books will work just as well :-)

message 23: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13002 comments I know E, but I'm a competitive player. If I read 20x 100-200 pagers every week I'd be seriously dragging the team down, which would make me feel bad = no fun.

Maybe if I was certain to be on a non-competitive team where none of the other players cared about the team scoring well I might feel better about it, because then at least it would be just me getting frustrated with the lack of points 😆

I'm sure there are super competitive people, but I just like to read, play, and organize books hahaha! Maybe you could make your reading number higher to accommodate your smaller page count?

No pressure - just thinking out loud!

That might work if there wasn't a book cap, but teams are balanced by how many books the members collectively read. So if people read loads of books, there will be less people on the team, if that makes sense. With a cap in place, basically the team that reads the highest average page books wins.
I know there are plenty of people that don't care, but every team has at least a few competitive people on it and I would feel bad for those people if I dragged the average down by that much.

I could also sign up with just 1 or 2 books a month, but that wouldn't be much fun either.

The only way around it would be for challenges to go by how many pages on average a person reads, rather than amount of books, because then it doesn't really matter how many books those pages are spread over, but that would mean extra work for either people when signing up, or mods to check this for each player, so I get why they don't do it.

I did the two challenges together the past couple of years, and it sucked a lot of the fun out of both of them for me, so I decided not to do it this year. Maybe I'll alternate every year or something.

Just wish there was just one big challenge without these restrictions out there though!

message 26: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 410 comments I signed up this year. I probably won't read many chunksters. I'm just in it for the fun though. I was looking through my old shelves and I'm not sure if I've ever done Wheel before. I've done Uno and Tower Teams several times, so that surprised me.

Anyway...for whatever it's worth, I'm not super competitive. Assign me as you see fit. :)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6537 comments Yeah my chunkster count won't be as high as towers books either due to two other team challenges and near end goals.

message 28: by Kelly (Maybedog) (new)

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 291 comments I have no idea how many books I read that will fit. Usually I read a book a day and I figure 2/3rds will match letters. Right now, though, a mentally ill and cruel roommate is creating havoc. If I weren't in the middle of it, I think it would be entertaining.

(view spoiler)

Anyway, while she's here I'm reading a lost less.

message 29: by Alysa (last edited Sep 22, 2025 06:53PM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3849 comments Wait wait wait...

Remember that you can collect your participation points from previous BOM (from January 2022) for an extra entry in the randomiser, on a basis of 3 participation points to 1 extra entry. Your team will be allowed a maximum of 6 entries for each BOM

So if a person has [fully] participated in, say, 6 BOMs between Jan 2022 and Sept 2025, that's 6 points, which would be 2 extra entries for that person? Meaning that if 4 people in total volunteer from their team including that person, the team would have 6 entries (1 entry each for the three other members, plus that person's "3" entries)?

Sorry if it's a dumb question, I just wanna make sure I understand!

Yikes - I couldn't read through that either. :(

message 32: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Sammy - while I'm competitive and love to challenge myself you're welcome on my team anytime. Every group I've ever been with has always just enjoyed the challenge for what it is and we've always made a point to say whatever you can contribute is what's important. I've never been a big chunkster reader and while I do try to read a few during these challenges I try to tell myself that my contribution to the team can be in other ways like taking on some of the crazier mini-challenges (we all know the ridiculous reads we've done to fit a task). We'd hate to lose your presence in the game. I feel like that goes for anyone. Yes this is a competition but really the fun is in playing with other like minded people. These challenges are my favorite times of year.

When Vicky nudged me that sign ups were open it was a huge boost to my day. These are the places I go when I want a silly smile. And as I'm currently going through allergy testing which requires me not to take my allergy meds for 5 days leading up the actual testing (THANK GOD that's starts today!) the distraction and joy that that little thing brought me as I sit here wanting to scratch my skin off and sneeze my brains out was HUGE for me.

My point is playing for fun is just as important as playing to win. Please don't deny yourself the fun of playing thinking you're letting your team down. We're just happy to have you with us.

Alysa H. | 3849 comments FWIW, I agree with everybody who is saying to just play for fun even if one feels one can’t be very competitive. 🙂

I tend to be competitive by nature (as some of you may recall, lol) but for the past few years I haven’t been able to play very competitively in NBRC challenges due to stronger constraints on my time. I still play when I feel like I can at least contribute something within the various time limits, and I enjoy choosing books based on the rules of the game, and chatting with teammates.
So, the more the merrier!

Bigger books are always great but the mods already improved the point system a while ago to make points/page counts fairer.
So, you never know what can happen. Up to a certain point, it’s anyone’s game.

I agree, play for the fun!

message 38: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13002 comments I do play just for fun. That's what challenges like UNO are for. 😁 But I also need to feed my competitive streak every now and then.
And I already chat with many NBRC peoples every day. Some of my favourite humans are part of this group.

If I was 100% guaranteed to be on a team that didn't have a single person on it that would be disappointed by coming in last, I would consider it, but if I make even one player's game less fun by not letting them have a chance to play competitively, it would make me feel bad, which is the opposite of what playing is supposed to do.

And before you think I wouldn't make much of an impact, bear in mind that I'm one of those people that reads a LOT. And with the length of my books at the moment for turf, I'd probably read to whatever the max personal cap for the challenge is. (I have tried only signing up with a couple of books out of the many I read in the past, but that wasn't much fun either). That's a lot of books with most of them only scoring 100 points (more than half are audio only, which is set at 100 pages by NBRC rules, the rest are between 100-200 pages mostly)

But honestly, I would much rather sit this out than try and play and not enjoy it. I absolutely LOVE NBRC challenges when I can play them competitively, so I will just hang on until I'm in a position to be able to do that 😁

message 39: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13002 comments I'd also like to point out, because this is all text-based and tone can be so difficult to convey...

I am completely at peace with this decision. I'm not angry or upset (ok, maybe just a little sad because I love wheels! 😁) I'm not in any way bitter about having to bow out. And I hope the rest of you have a fantastic time playing!

I just know from experience what I do and don't enjoy, and I really don't want to taint my enjoyment of either challenge any further by trying to juggle the two. I'd rather take turns every year if that's what it takes 😉

Actually a follow-up question:
So "tokens" (i.e., ruby gem coins) are being traded in for the extra entries? I want to make sure to log that correctly in my gem coin collection if/when it comes up.

message 45: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13653 comments Mod
Yes, they're traded in. Once you've spent a token on an extra BOM entry, it is gone.

Great, thank you!
I had been thinking of using some of my Ruby coins for another BOM takeover but it can be hard to time it so it’s not during a team challenge. 😆

I love finding tricky task books, too. It really broadens my genre reading and new author finds. My husband has given up asking why on earth I’m reading something and getting the answer ‘It has a pink cover’ or ‘the author’s name starts with Y.’
