This story of hope and resilience follows Miguel and his Abueltio as they work on an Oaxacan island selling dream catchers, in hopes that Miguel's wish of being reunited with his parents will come true.
4. Response
I think this book won the Belpre Award because not only are the illustrations unique, but they portray the Latino cultural experience. If you took all the words out, you would still be able to follow the storyline of Miguel saving money to buy an airplane. The illustrations offer an insight into the vibrancy of Latino culture on the island, including daily tasks such as selling coconuts. The pictures also clearly show the love between Miguel and his Abuelito. I would recommend this book to families, especially if their family has been recently separated or wanted to read more inclusive material.
