It could be Redwall. This cover seems close to what you describe. I thought it was a badger at first glance although it is probably a mouse.

I don't think it was just badgers, it just happened to be a badger on the cover. I don't remember the significance of the big ball of light annoyingly.

The cover had a badger on it and a large ball of light. It was not anything to do with The Animals Of Farthing Wood. I think it was adult but I'm sorry I really don't remember anything else.
