sometimes. I often by a book for its cover without even knowing what the story is about
I have. As a lover of thrillers, I’ve read over 150 novels and I can tell by the cover if it’s going to be cheesy or not. Much in the same way I might decide on a film to watch based on the production quality of the DVD cover. That is, if I’m just browsing and judging SOLELY on promo artwork. For example: Sharknado or The Shining.
absolutely! if it has sprayed edges I have to have it! we dont get many of those where I live
Yes! I do that too. And then sometimes if the book plot doesn't match up with the cover image I can be left confused. I used to play the "pretty" and "ugly" book cover game in another group. I found out from that what different people consider pretty or ugly can be vastly different than what I think is pretty or ugly too. Sometimes their pretty book cover was ugly to me. I also learned that I had a hard time finding an actual book cover that I thought was pretty as I can be fussy in that regard. Ugly covers were easier to find.
But a pretty cover does not guarantee a good story.
It does look better on your Year in Books though!
I don't like those blank covers with only words as it doesn't tell you anything about the book. Especially years later as you are looking back through the Years in Books. An image will help you remember that book.
absolutely. first of all I cannot read a book with real people on the cover ESPECIALLY a shirtless man. I like men but it's also against my will so plz remove these men from my book covers. if it's a book I really want to read tho I might read it on my Kindle so that I don't need to look at the cover. I didn't read quicksilver until the new covers came out bc I hate the original covers.
I do a lot, even though some book cover has actually lured me into reading shit. I love fantasy book cover, with artsy characters and floral design

I try my best not to judge a book by its cover, but of course I still do sometimes. I agree with the people who said they don’t like shirtless men on the cover of books. Although, I have read books with shirtless men on the cover and they did end up being pretty good so…..🤷♀️
Yes! if I see a man (especially if they're half naked) I run away from the book.

Yes, I do. If a cover is pretty and has good reviews and is 100% clean. I'll read it. but if it's not a good cover (in my eyes ofc) then I won't read it
For sure. If you found a book with a cover it draws you in or out, if you found a book with no cover you’re less likely to want to pick it up much less read it. Like my Tia use to tell me Mija Presentation is everything . And I’ve found this saying to be completely true.
Yes. There is a Reason Much is Spent on Selecting the Right Book Cover. It is a Marketing Decision to Sell Books. I’ve Seen Different Samples and it Really does Influence if I am Interested in Looking into a Book.
While browsing bookstores, I do this. Book marketing is very interesting and is the subject of a popular book by Evan Friss called The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore.Cover design and placement are major factors in book sales. However, when browsing books on good reads I tend to look at the write up or the content much more. For me, the site is an equalizer.
I admit that an interesting cover does get my attention. However, I rely on descriptions and reviews from my GR friends more than covers before deciding to dive into a book. :)

more often then not, yes. but if i like the cover I go to find the summary. if I have to open to book for the summary I tend not want to read it because the back is full of aclaimed reviews. when a book has multiple different designs it seems to have a pull to those who may like one design over the other. 1. title

Yes, I do however always read the back, the blog that tells what the book is about.I have never bought a book by just looking at its cover.

Sometimes. While there are some styles of covers that appeal to me.. MOST of the time I pick a book up and read what it says based on a GUT FEELING.. LOL. There are exceptions. I picked up, for example only, The Wren in the Holly Library because it was just PRETTY. (I have since finished it and left a review). But other times I just feel a "pull" to a book and pick it up and see what it is about.
Yes. I'll read the back of the book and the first few pages of most books I pick up at the store. But if it's a really pretty book I will pick it up over boring covers. I don't care how much acclaim a book has. Bird brain wants shiny.

A while ago there was a fashion for “misery lit”, where people would write about their terrible childhoods. I learned to avoid any book with a sepia tinted back view of a small child.
I really hate when there's a character on the cover—I wanna picture them myself, and half the time the description doesn't even match the cover!

Yes. That and titles. The cover and the title are the first thing I see, so how could I now judge books by the cover at least somewhat? It is a nice cover and a cool title that motivates me to pick up a book at the store or the library, or click on it on goodreads, and read the synopsis. Obviously the cover is not the deciding factor when I choose what books to buy/check out/add to my TBR, but a book with a pretty cover is more likely to end up on one of my shelves simply because the cover is what draws me in.
Yes definitely. Presentation is everything unfortunately there are many amazing books we overlook because the cover didn’t get our attention.

Covers Matter! I get Early Release Books and Often don’t see a Cover at First. Just a Random Book and Title and White Cover. I have noticed how much a Difference it Makes When a Cover is Put Up. Sometimes, it Makes Me Really Interested in the Book and other Times, if it’s a Similar Cover to other Books I’ve Read, I wonder if the Book will be Similar, ok but boring. It does influence me. That’s Why so much $$$ is Spent On Marketing the Right Cover.
