Book: Edge of Dark Water
Author: Joe R. Lansdale
Pages: 292
Date Read: 11/11/2025
How it fits: A young girl is found dead in the WATER. She was murdered. Her friends know she wanted to escape their town and go to Hollywood to be a star. They decide they are going to dig up her body and use FIRE to transform her into ashes, and then take them to Hollywood to fulfill her dream. When they search her room, they stumble upon her diary and learn that her brother (who was a criminal) robbed a bank and buried money in the EARTH (to keep it from their alcoholic father). The brother also died so now the teenagers need to decide if they are going to look for the money which would help bring them one step closer to bringing their friend's ashes to Hollywood.

This plot sounds crazy but it was a really good (and heartbreaking) book.

Week 10 Prompt: Story Soup
Words: WATER, EARTH, FIRE

Book: Brandende meisjes Brandende meisjes by C.J. Tudor
Author: C.J. Tudor
Read: 11 november
Pages: 358
How it fits: The title of this novel is’The Burning Girls. Those burning girls are little puppets people made of wood and left behind to remember those that died in FIRE as martyrs for their religion.

As this novel is about a priest, holy water also is important: it is part of an exorcism set for the priest got from an unknown sender.
Without telling too much: EARTH is important. Not only does the MC with her mother lives next to the graveyard, but the characters are frequentely on and sometimes under the earth.

🗝️ Week 10 Response
The best stories aren’t always made from the best ingredients.
But they still taste like something.

If you combined your two books into one recipe, what would it be called?

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1235 comments I think both of our books are on the darker side of things. But fire, water and earth are important elements. I’m thinking we need a recipe with earthy root veggies that are maybe broiled or slightly roasted on a grill/fire.

Therefore, my recipe suggestion would be roasted root vegetables!

I like your suggestion. I would add a dessert: GRILLED STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE

The earth in our stories is represented by the flower or shortcake which is similar in structure to the sand ( in dutch shortcake is ‘sandcake’). It is the basis of the recipe.

Fire transformed our ingredients ( flower, butter, eggs, sugar,..) .’ in a cookie in the oven. The same way authors tranform words and ideas in a story.

The cream is the water of the stories. Like water it is a liquid. It makes food and books something extra qnd something that makes it more easy to digest
