Not sure if you've started this or not Donna so I'm going to start posting my thoughts from when I read the book.
Definitely liked the opening and think the relationship and dynamic between Conor and Kel is an interesting one. It's a bit sibling-esque but with an unhealthy (and I think rather ignored by Conor) power imbalance. The Ashkers remind me mainly of Jewish peoples with maybe a little of Traveler mixed in.
Overall I found it to be a nice departure from Clare's usual books in the Shadowhunter world.
Knowledge is feared no matter what world. It is interesting how the author brings that to reality in this world as well. Magic is highly feared because one group of people mishandled it, so automatically, nobody should have access to it, despite all the good others used to do with it. Why not just punish the wrongdoers and not allow them to use it, and allow those who use it properly for healing to use it? Say only healers are allowed to use it on a license-only basis. Then again, we wouldn't have a story. LOL!
All that fuss over getting a bandage? Maybe Conor is related to my husband. Men can be such babies sometimes LOL!
