I have asked you before multiple times to split the editions that you want to be merged but you ignore my request. This is the last time I am going to do your split for you.

Done

It's not "my split". I don't own the database. I'm pointing out a correction that should be made that I can't make myself. I would be happy to make the correction, but that's not an option available to me.

For many years, pointing out an error in the database that I'm not able to correct has been enough to get the correction made. I'm happy to continue politely pointing out such errors. You are requesting that I introduce further errors into the database, hoping someone else will clean up after me. I'm not comfortable with that.

If you choose not to correct the database once an error has been cited, that's your option. Perhaps someone else will use the information offered to make the correction.

David Raz (davidraz) | 12737 comments Martin,

This folder is called ''Requests for Superlibrarians'', not ''Pointing out errors so superlibrarians can fix them''. Like all librarians, I volunteer my time, and I already have a backlog of tasks that could fill several lifetimes. I’m not looking to add more.

You mentioned that for many years, pointing out an error was sufficient to get it fixed—and you’re right. That was when splitting was a trivial task that took a few seconds. Unfortunately, that's no longer the case. Splitting now often takes a long time and may require many repeated attempts. When I'm tied up that long on a single request, I can't process others.

That’s why I’ve been asking that the splits be done beforehand, even if they aren’t perfect. It doesn’t "introduce errors"—it allows us to work incrementally. In fact, all the other librarians have found this request reasonable and have been happy to help.
Note that I’m not asking you to recombine entries afterward. I'm happy to take care of that part myself, especially if asked.

You're free to decline, of course. But if you choose not to do the split, the merge may remain on hold indefinitely. I simply can’t prioritize work that others are unwilling to help with.

Emily | 17471 comments Speaking of many years, when we used to have the long superlibrarian "please delete this book" threads, it was actually expected that librarians who posted there separate them out together first before asking for a merge in the thread (if they had the capability).

Librarians who wouldn't have known to do that before posting in this folder are happy to help as David mentioned. You've pointed out that you would be happy to correct errors, but you aren't taking the first step to do so, which is why requests may go unaddressed. There are only a few people who are able to complete them.

K1 Beena | 71 comments How would splitting introduce error to the data base when anyway that is part of the process?
The split is "nobody's split"; everyone is a volunteer here so if one cares enough to mention the correction, one earns it with the split and all.
