Pages: 897 pages

Length: 1 month (August)

Participants: Beth, Susan, Sophia

Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

Here are some questions to help get the conversation started! Feel free to look up discussion questions specific to this book or come up with your own. Just make sure any questions that contain spoilers are under spoiler tags.
Discussion questions are not required but may be a fun way to talk about the book and get to know each other!

Prior to starting:
What prompted you to join this buddy read?
Have you read this author before? What do you think of their other books?

Mid-read:
What character or ideas do you relate to the most and why?
Do you have any favorite quotes or scenes?

After reading:
What was enjoyable or not-so-enjoyable about this book?
Did this book change your perception about anything, either within the book (character development) or in real life?

Susan | 621 comments I've had this book on my reading list since devouring She’s Come Undone. I just now realized it's 897 pages long! Hoping its a fast read!

Beth | 1587 comments If we need to extend into Sep, we certainly can. I'm not sure I realized it was so long, either! I am really looking forward to it, though!

Beth | 1587 comments I'm starting this chonky boi today. It's due back at the library in two days. 🫠

Susan | 621 comments I haven't gotten around to starting it yet. We may need to extend to September. How is it going Beth?

Susan | 621 comments Just completed this book and I loved it! Highly recommend!

Beth | 1587 comments Finally finished this chonker. I should have read it more straight through than I did; I don't know how many books I read in between various chapters of this one. Because of that, I lost the throughline of the story, although I was able to mostly pick it up. Mostly, I got to the point of feeling like it was soooooo loooooooong (which it is), even longer because of how many days passed between starting and finishing.

I'm really interested to watch the limited series. I can definitely see Mark Ruffalo doing a great job with this, and I'm wondering how much focuses on the family history vs staying current.

All to say, bottom line, I really did enjoy it. I felt so sorry for Dominick and everything he went through in his life. The family history of his grandfather was fascinating.

For such a long book, it was incredibly readable and engaging (in spite of what I said earlier!)... and definitely better read as a focused effort.
