I finished the book. I'll refrain for sharing any thoughts until others have read and/or started some dialogue.

I didn't think this was brilliant like most readers have.

This book was powerful and brutal. It has very vivid characters who was terribly flawed. I cannot bring myself to like any of the characters. I know that I am in the minority of readers, but this book was not enjoyable to me. Memorable? Yes. Touching? Not so much. It was a bit predictable with the story of life in Afghanistan as we've seen the brutality of it in countless books and movies. I also thought it was pushing me to feel a certain way and that I should have felt terrible Amir and Hassan. (hide spoiler)]

In case someone stumbles by that hasn't read the book and doesn't want to know....

(view spoiler)[The one item in the above blurb - the possibility of redemption - was what kept me reading. I wanted to know how Amir sought and found redemption. Sadly, that didn't materialize for me. I found myself waiting for the story to end. It was so depressing with unspeakable things happening so often. (hide spoiler)]
