Dr. Santos Rubiano Herrera, a Spanish physician serving in the Light Infantry (Cazadores) Battalion No.14 as a Medical Officer of the Spanish Armed Forces, was part of the small column of Spanish troops who survived the revolutionaries’ attack of Calamba on June 1, 1898. These insightful historical accounts are windows to the soul of a people—accounts on the eve of nationhood, even more so, and in the case of Lipa, especially because it had a central role, not only in the Philippine Revolution begun in 1896, but also in the Philippine-American War that continued in Batangas province well after President Aguinaldo had surrendered.
