Saar The Book owl | 3095 comments I'm still reading the book and it's a story to keep your head around it. I've bought an eye-read on Kindle.

Nirkatze | 20939 comments I eye-read this the first time. Going to try audio for reread. :)

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 737 comments I really loved this one but put it on hold at 25% because I was overbooked and decided to prioritise finished series... So I am definitely looking forward to get back to it.

Nirkatze | 20939 comments It was a great read. Really enjoyed it. I'd like to try Islington's finished series sometime too.

If you want to read 'The Licanius Trilogy'...I'm yours. I've reread the first book a couple of times, but the other books are gathering dust on my shelves...

Ann-Marie | 5434 comments I am up for the other series, maybe after Black Company?

Saar The Book owl | 3095 comments When does these end?

Next year... there's 10 of them plus the sidequel 3.5, so they basically run to November...

Nirkatze | 20939 comments I'll put a poke note in my tracker to see if folks are interested in January.

message 12: by Ann-Marie (new) - added it

Ann-Marie | 5434 comments I am okay waiting or I was thinking maybe every other month opposite Malazan?

Nirkatze | 20939 comments Hm. This is just a trilogy so I'm not sure I want to wait two months to go one to next--I'd rather find a stretch where we have three months free...

That works for me :)

message 15: by Marie (new) - added it

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 737 comments I would be interested too, on some later date, as I own the physical copies and I am yet to read them...

Saar The Book owl | 3095 comments Same for me as Marie...

Nirkatze | 20939 comments Does January sound good for folks? Could do, say, Jan-March 11th? I could probably put in a placeholder BR without Yanique getting too mad at me--we are now within 6 months.

Saar The Book owl | 3095 comments If it's okay for the rest, then it's fine for me.

message 19: by Marie (new) - added it

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 737 comments January to March works for me. This year is already full of great series for me to eye read but it's good to finally get this one schedule.

Nirkatze | 20939 comments Started! I'd forgotten a lot! Through Part I (view spoiler)

Nirkatze | 20939 comments Through Chapter 33 (view spoiler)

message 22: by Ann-Marie (new) - added it

Ann-Marie | 5434 comments I am trying to make it through Sporemaggedon 2 and then will start this :)

message 23: by Marie (new) - added it

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 737 comments I still totally plan to join this one. Will have plenty of time to finish until November... Just hope I won't forget too much until then.

Nirkatze | 20939 comments Finished! Glad I reread... hope I remember when #2 comes out. There's a LOT going on in this book! (view spoiler)

message 25: by Ann-Marie (new) - added it

Ann-Marie | 5434 comments I finished part 1 and I am enjoying it quite a lot so far! (view spoiler)

Nirkatze | 20939 comments The world-building is really interesting. I like how Islington combines new ideas with comfortable Roman tropes.

Exactly! Full disclosure though, I am not stressing trying to keep the ranks straight with who gets what will, yeah, that would make reading this work and no thanks to that. I have general ideas where the main characters fall and that is good enough lol

Don't you know them logic puzzle books?

something like this, but for the categories in the above image... then you have to solve... but with Wills I guess... or the House ranks in Malazan...

Ann-Marie | 5434 comments I took a practice LSAT test when I was in college for my bachelors and there went my plans to attend law school so yeah, logic puzzle books were not fun for me...

Nirkatze | 20939 comments Ranks aren't bad--it's just Latin and math... Eight Octavii cede to 1 Septimus, and seven Septimus cede to one Sextus, so a Sextus receives 7x8=56 Octavii worth of Will, with some fractions for the Septimus. But you don't really need to keep track except that anyone over a Septimus is going to be hulk powerful... and it sounds like anything higher than a Sextus is super rare anyway.

But here's the chart at the start of the book if anyone wants reference:

I was forced to take Latin in high school because it was a requirement for honors level and I blocked it out of my brain because when I say I had an attitude about it, I really had an attitude lol

What? The math classes I took for my math requirement to graduate college were how to teach math to elementary children 1 & 2, I think we got to simple equations. My science requirements were 2 classes that had no labs and were considered science for non-science majors, I think one was human reproduction and development and the other the fact of life.....I was not a model STEM student lol

it's a kind of mathematical notation useful for permutations and combinations of objects...

Math makes my brain hurt. I can figure out 25% off when I am shopping a sale and shit like that but yeah, my higher math days are over, a fact I celebrate! And when my nieces and nephews ask me to help with their math I am like Listen, I can tell you the answer but I can't do it how your teachers want you to do it so even simple, basic math is beyond me at this point lol

I mean... I have the same issue, ever since they invented New Math, which is supposed to be better if you learn it in school, but looking at it having learned the old way, looks stupid...

Yeah new math is what I meant! So you want me to start adding from the LEFT and not the RIGHT? What sorcery is this??? And don't even get me started on how they want kids to divide! What? And they spent so much time this year (he was in 4th grade) learning to estimate with all these techniques and shit, I was like why don't you just solve the problem and stop rounding up and down? My nephew was like it's faster my way so my sister came up with 3 math problems and timed us and I had all 3 done and he was partway through #2 and I was like suck it, kid, I told you I was not a dummy lol

Note: We MAY be a little competitive in my family and the concept of letting kids win is not something we do, like ever. Give the kids a dose of reality young!

Maybe it's better at scaling up to bigger numbers or something, I dunno...

I can do alot of math up to 1000ish in my head, then I might need paper and pencil to help things along... I can't do everything in my head like some people can...

If there is one voodoo math that I think would be cool to know, it's the Asian version where they draw lines and the intersections give the answers...

message 45: by Ann-Marie (new) - added it

Ann-Marie | 5434 comments How do you know where to draw the lines? I do not see how that is easier than simply multiplying 12x32 lol

message 46: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

the lines are the digits... it works for bigger numbers too... it gets complicated when 0 is involved... it still works tho... I just like math tricks...

Nirkatze | 20939 comments New Math! Though I think this is actually Old Math...

And if you think those lines are fun, check out these that I deal with every day at work:
