This book was read as a paperback in the 70's. The main character is Sophie, a lonely middle-aged woman who sees a therapist that she calls Ass-Bird because of her miserable marriage. Sophie lives in Connecticut, and she volunteers at some student organization on a whim. She meets and falls in love and has an affair with a young black student. I do not know the author and am not completely sure of the title, but it was something like: And They Call This Love? or Is This Called Love?
There's a review of it that mentions Ass-Bird, in very tiny print, in this copy of the Times Literary Supplement from 1972 on archive.org - https://archive.org/details/TheTimesL...
