St Peter Port emerged as a town in the thirteenth century. Over the course of the centuries it has enjoyed a remarkable development. It was a frontier town with a garrison, ever vulnerable to French invasion. It lay in a catholic French diocese and was loyal to English kings. It turned to a thorough-going Calvinism in correspondence with Geneva.

It gave shelter to Huguenot refugees; to royalists fleeing Revolutionary France; to Victor Hugo in exile 1855-1870. It was here that Hugo found the peace and quiet to finish writing les Misérables.

St Peter Port’s merchants developed an entrepôt supplying millions of gallons of alcohol to English smugglers and many tons of tobacco to French contrebandiers.

Its buildings range from medieval Gothic through Georgian classicism and Regency chic to Victorian Revival. St Peter Port is a large outdoor museum deserving hours and days of exploration.
