Should this edition be set as invalid or deleted?

Hi,
I've come across two editions of the same book in the database, each with a different cover. One of these covers was used for the actual published edition. The other appeared in a Facebook post by the publisher prior to release, where readers were asked to vote for their preferred cover — this one lost and was never used for a published edition.

Should the edition featuring the unused cover be marked as invalid, or should it be merged with the correct, published edition?

It should be combined with correct edition (if it has reviews) and then marked as invalid.

I thought we couldn't merge different covers. I've had several similar cases. Both the superlibrarian and the support responded that they can't merge, they can only mark as invalid.

If the cover was never used it doesn't need to be retained.
