Read this in the mid 1980s, though it could be older. The narrator is a brain, one of many brains that populate a barren world and communicate telepathically. They are encased in containers and have no interaction with their environment. Another brain has postulated a theory that the brains on other planets don't live in containers, but have organic extentions that allow them to move around, experience their surroundings, and interact with each other, 'bodies' if you will. The narrator brain is telepathically reaching out to brains on other planets to disprove this dumb theory.
