Roughly what year / decade did you read it?
I remember part of it the daughter washes the moms hair. Don’t know why that stood out to me. Also remember her describing how the other kids would make fun of her for having a mentally disabled mom, and they would be surprised that she wasn’t also
Wait- it’s called My Louisiana Sky! I was able to find it online when I remembered her dad was also present
