Missha (mishtique) | 19 comments Hi! A bit odd but I was wondering, what are the danmeis you have been selling / unhauling / giving away? Because let's ve real, we can't keep them all 🥹

I've recebtly sold my thousand autumns series on vinted because, while I really enjoyed the read, I really didnt see myself rereading it in the future. And with me statting to ay off my mortgage, all the money is welcome 😅

... | 270 comments Not very recently, but in general I unhauled MDZS and Guardian, and I'm also thinking of unhauling Coins of Destiny vol. 1 because I didn't get invested in the story; I'm just holding onto it because it's a truly beautiful edition and my heart aches just thinking of parting with it 😅. I also wanted to unhaul The Imperial Uncle and Golden Terrace in the past, but now decided to keep them because of how rare they've become.

thedeadlyscimitar | 128 comments The only danmei that I’ve unhualed so far is the first volume of BAB because I found that series has a lot of content that I’m just really not into personally. I’m considering doing the same with all of the Meatbun books that I own. I’ve only held onto them because they are so pretty and part of me wants to at least try them out for myself 😭

Unhaul is a word that I haven't heard before, but it is very descriptive.

I have decided to buy Seven Seas books as e-books in the future, because my book shelves are heaving. My hope is that I won't have to unhaul danmei books if many of them are digital.

Reading on an e-reader isn't quite the same thing as a physical book so I'll still be buying Rosmei books in hard copy. That is my compromise to prevent so many unhauling books in the future.

At least that is the plan 😊

Sofia Yordanova (iordanovasofia) | 30 comments Guys, how do you manage to unhaul (pretty cool word indeed) books? Because I try to get a physical copy of every book I have read even if that means buying a book years after I have actually read it. So, how do you get rid not just of any books but of books in one of your favorite genres (I'm assuming)? Doesn't it hurt emotionally?

Not really, I like danmei, but it doesn't mean I like or love every single danmei I've ever read. There are plenty I'm lukewarm about, some I disliked. Sometimes I'll buy one blindly and it turns out not to be my cup of tea, so I unhaul it after reading. I wouldn't unhaul books I'm attached to. My faves are staying with me forever.

Ah, im the other way around! I want my book collection to be books i either still have to read pr that i absolutely loved and will reread in the future. Im trying to stop buying books just because, both to safe money and be more conscious of my spending, but also because of dpace and future plans

Have you read meatbuns books or are they still standing there unread?

I totally understand that you won't let go of the ones that are put of print!

I usually buy physical copies of danmei novels only if I've already read them as a fan translation or ebooks and really really loved them. Or, if it's an official translation that's not available as ebooks, I have to be sure that at the very least I'll read it at some point.
However, not counting danmei, my physical library is full of books I ended up disliking, no longer like or have lost all interest to read and I just don't know what to do with them. After all, I've spent so many years gathering them and I just feel bad about parting with them.
So yeah, it hurts me emotionally, but I can't keep those books forever. Who knows where life will take me and I may not be able to take all hundreds of books I have. I've been considering to gift some of them to a library or a few libraries. Some I may sell or gift. I don't know what I'll do with the defective ones though. I'm afraid no one besides me will want them.

NiaKantorka (kantorka) | 83 comments I put my copy of volume one of How to Survive as a Villain into the swap your books shelf in our neighbourhood. The cover looked beautiful but I read the fan translation while the official translation arrived. After a promising start the story tuned boring and I found the MC and the ML lacking in personality and character development.

By now I try to read the fan translation first and buy the official version later to avoid this happening again and to support authors I love or like.

... | 270 comments That's unfortunate. HSAV fantranslation was MTL however, done by a person who doesn't speak Chinese, so it must've been a worse reading experience than reading the official.

It's a good method to read fantranslations first, but there are novels without fantranslations, so I'm curious what you do in such instances?

Since this topic popped up for me again, I sold Riverbay Road Men's Dormitory vol.1 recently because i dropped it, sadly despite the cute cover it just didn't click with me at all. I like Feitian but after Riverbay Road, I won't be picking up his contemporary novels again; at least the money I sold Riverbay for, I invested part of it into ordering Kaleidoscope of Death vol.2. I always accept the risk of not liking a book I buy, so it's fine.

Katie❄️ (theicequeen) | 268 comments Oh man… I am a book hoarder. I don’t tend to buy physical copies unless I know I will read it again. Usually always in HC since I know I will be keeping it forever. I try to get it from the library first. Can’t do that with majority of danmei though. It is fairly rare for me to get rid of something. I do have one series I’ve been waffling on, A Song of Ice and Fire. That was one impulse buy that went wrong. I thought since it was so popular it would have been awesome but I couldn’t even read them. I had to ditch them each time for the audiobooks. I did always try reading them first. They are HC and large and take up a lot of much needed space. Sigh.

NiaKantorka (kantorka) | 83 comments @….
I just wait for those books and hope someone will pick it up either as an official translation or as a fan translation. I’ve been waiting to read Erha for years now because I know I’d get grumpy over the MTL last parts.

Thankfully, no new books to be unhauled.

... | 270 comments I meant how do you decide whether to buy them if the official translation is coming out but there is no fantranslation to read beforehand? Because you said you only want to buy what you've read first now.

message 14: by NiaKantorka (new)

NiaKantorka (kantorka) | 83 comments I haven’t had that problem yet and have always found a translation when needed. Admittedly, I haven’t read that many danmei yet. 25 to 30 books (all volumes included) isn’t that many I think. 🤔

message 15: by ... (new)

... | 270 comments Gotcha! There's around 10 danmei coming out officially that don't have any fantranslation in English, some more where fantranslations are incomplete, and even more with fantranslations taken down already due to licenses, so I was wondering how you'd go about deciding whether to buy those. For example Falling by Yu Cheng or Psycho by Xiao Yaozi from Via Lactea.
