I really like the Alison Weir one, but haven't read the Jean Plaidy yet. I'll let you know what I think when I get to it.

message 202: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Lyn!
The Plaidy one is a slow read, but I'm enjoying it. There are a few pages where she rambles on about stuff I really dont care about, but then it gets better again.

I'll try to find the Weir one and read that next :), should be fun to compare them

My latest finds:
- The Sixth Wife by Suzannah Dunn
- New Worlds, Lost Worlds: The Rule of the Tudors, 1485-1603 by Susan Brigden
- The Tudor Age by Jasper Ridley
- Mary Tudor: The Spanish Tudor by H.F.M. Prescott

Darbus | 11 comments That book about Mary Tudor looks really interesting, I'll have to try to find it. Thanks for the recommendations.

My latest purchase was to buy a good used copy of The Last Queen: A Novel by C.W. Gortner. I loved the Catherine de Medici book so much, I couldn't pass this one up.

I found a couple more today:

Isolde, Queen of the Western Isle Rosalind Miles
The Lady and the Unicorn Tracy Chevalier
The Painted Kiss Elizabeth Hickey
Unicorn's Blood Patricia Finney
The Spanish Bride: A Novel of Catherine of Aragon Laurien Gardner

Jennifer, I am really interested in what you think of The Lady and the Unicorn. I have looked at that one many times.

And I love Rosalind Miles.

message 208: by Rosalie (new)

Rosalie Sambuco | 20 comments I read THE LADY AND THE UNICORN several months ago. I loved it. In fact, I started reading other books by Tracy Chevalier. All of them have been good.

message 209: by Lyn (Readinghearts), The mod of last resort/Mod #3 (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 1550 comments Mod
That's good to know, Rosalie. The only one I have read was her newest one Remarkable Creatures and I really liked that one.

message 210: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Huston (telynor) | 71 comments Someone earlier was asking about Queen Victoria -- here are some good titles:

Becoming Queen Victoria by Kate Williams
We Two by Gillian Gill -- about the marriage of Victoria and Albert
Victoria by Stanley Weintraub -- a huge doorstop of a book, but very well written and entertaining; he's also written bios about Prince Albert and Edward VII
Victoria by Cecil Woodham-Smith

message 211: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Huston (telynor) | 71 comments Reading The True Memoirs of Little K, by Adrienne Sharpe. I am getting very annoyed with it to boot. At least three Romanovs are playing prominent parts in it -- Nicholas II, Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich, and Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich. There is a plot twist in there that is so unbelievable as to be ludicrous. Grrrr.

message 212: by Lyn (Readinghearts), The mod of last resort/Mod #3 (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 1550 comments Mod
Sounds interesting, Rebecca, even if it IS annoying you.

message 213: by [deleted user] (new)

I bought two books recently relating (I think)

The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn and this one is a bit of a spin on things lol Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter

message 214: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments I really want to read The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn.

message 215: by [deleted user] (new)

I've just started it, so I'll let you know how it goes Kate :)

message 216: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments Awesome, please do Niecole :D

message 217: by [deleted user] (new)

Oki doki...
It looks to be a good book, its written in the perspective of Queen Elizabeth, and then she finds this secret diary of her mother

message 218: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments oooo ... Its sounds good. I love Anne and Elizabeth the most :)

message 219: by [deleted user] (new)

I really like Anne, dont know what I feel about Elizabeth. I adore Catherine and Mary...

Have you read the Borgia Bride Kate?

message 220: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments I like Catherine and Mary too !!! I have a big soft spot for them, they were treated so poorly.

I cant say i know as much about Elizabeth as i do about the others though.

No i havent read it yet. I have it though and have meaning too.

Have you ? Did you like it ?

Another i have that i really want to read is about Catherines sister The Last Queen

message 221: by [deleted user] (new)

I have the same soft spot for them, for the same reason, especially for Mary, I think she was a very strong person to have a father such as Henry, and being the eldest she got dealt more humiliating blows than the rest...

I did like it very much, and it was something different to the usual English Royal houses...

I'll have to go check out that one, thanks Kate!

message 222: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments She had such a hard life, i know she is villified for her reign but i think allot of it reflects back to her upbringing.

Yes, it is nice to mix it up and read about other royals. I will see if i can squeeze it in.

:)))

message 223: by [deleted user] (new)

Cool, I think you might really enjoy it

I've only read Girl with a Pearl Earring by TC and I loved it. I hope to love this one as much :)

I haven't read anything yet by Rosalind Miles but I've heard such great things about her!

Kate, I agree with Niecole... you should definitely read The Borgia Bride.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 1550 comments Mod
I still have to get to the Borgia Bride myself. It is on my shelf. Some mod I am, huh?

Niecole - The Secret Diary looks fun. I love different takes on things. I have it on my future reads list.

message 226: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments Buddy read then Lyn (at some stage lol)
You both are great mods !! Its not easy doing this and having a life

message 227: by [deleted user] (new)

Lyn, I'll let you know how it goes.
Another book that looks like great fun is the funny titled Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter.
Its written in the voice of Queen Victoria, but there are deamons in London, and she's the slayer...
Could only be fun to read

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 227 comments Happy Birthday, Lyn!

message 234: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Henley | 3 comments Wow, since joining this group it looks like my winter reading list just quadrupled (50rupled?).

Niecole--it's funny that you mentioned Queen Victoria, Demon Hunter. My niece gave it to me for my birthday last week and I plan on reading it in the next few days.

I just finished reading Paris '97 by Eric Hamilton. It's a fictional book about Princess Diana, but it's very fact based. A really good read!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 1550 comments Mod
I will have to check that one out, Elizabeth.

And thanks for the birthday wishes ladies. I received a Nook from my boys and $50.00 to spend on books from my parents. Pretty good all in all.

Lisa Bass (lisadbass) | 14 comments Can anyone recommend a particularly good book on Mary Queen of Scots. I have been interested in her for sometime, however, there are so many books out there on her, I was wondering which you would consider the best? Thank you :)

I really enjoyed "Mary Queen of Scots" by Antonia Fraser and "The Life of Mary Queen of Scots: An Accidental Tragedy" by Roderick Graham. The last one is a bit dense, but still a good read.

I just finished Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles by Margaret George; it does a great job at covering her entire life, yet it's SO long and can get a bit tedious. Very informative though.

Well, in anticipation of the Borgias show on Showtime, I just ordered
The Borgias and Their Enemies: 1431-1519 by Christopher Hibbert
AND
The Family by Mario Puzo

from the library and

The Borgias by Alexandre Dumas

for my nook. Plus I still have

The Borgia Bride by Jeanne Kalogridis to read. Should be fun reading.

I watched that sneak peek four times yesterday then started researching books to buy. I am curious about Puzo's take on the original crime family but I am also really looking forward to a non-fic about them. My books can't get here soon enough! I forgot to add, I also bought No Will But His: A Novel of Katherine Howard by Sarah A. Hoyt. Couldn't get through the amazon checkout without yet another Tudor book! lol
