Mister Bee | 4 comments Hello, I'm looking for stories and books where someone is thoroughly mistaken for someone's lost or true love, I just finished a beautiful Icelandic short story called "Summer Night" where a young man on a whim stays over on a island he visited as a boy. He always dreamed of having a dream lover waiting for him and greeting him when he returns. Strangely, the locals think he has been here just a couple of years ago, but he insist that he hasn't been there since he was 5 year old. While exploring the island at night, a beautiful teenage girl greets him and says its wonderful that he's returned. He goes along with it, thoroughly confused and kisses her goodnight. Later he finds out that her true love went abroad and died a couple of years ago, and he bears an uncanny resemblance to him. This left her deeply traumatized, and she has been wondering the hills ever night trying to find him. I love these kind of mistaken identity stories where characters fulfills the other's emotional needs. Does anyone have more they could recommend like this? I'm okay with harlequins but would prefer more dramatic novels. Thanks

Holgate | 3 comments Hey Mister Bee. I have a recommendation for you that fits your criteria. The Dark Wood by Christine Weston. Its a golden oldie from the 40s, but very engaging. A woman has been a war widow for about 3 years. Her husband died overseas and she is slowly losing the will to live. Then one day, she's in a tavern with her former sisters-in-law who points out a man who looks just like her dead husband. After that she's fixated on him. She begins stalking him, learning his habits and likes, and watching him play in the park with his young son. It's largely a case of transference with her seeing him a replacement for her dead husband. Despite the initial dark tone of the book, it is a romance. It turns out they have friends in common, and he trying to recover from his wife's infidelity and her demand for a divorce. They use each other to get better, and do end up together in the end.
