Sci fi. Beauty and the Beast retelling. Read before 2005.

Hello! I am a librarian looking for a book for a patron. The book was read prior to 2005. It was a science fiction Beauty and the Beast retelling, and she remembers that the beast character could use some kind of virtual reality to visit places around the world like Paris. She thinks the book had a black cover with a rose, but she might be mixing it up with something else.

It is NOT Beastly by Alex Flinn or Of Beauty and Beast by Stacey Jay.

Try "Beauty by Sheri S. Tepper. Sleeping Beauty, not Beauty & the Beast, but it is a pre-2005 sci-fi fairy tale retelling, and does involve traveling around.
