This is the thread where you can submit a task idea for the 50 Point Task contest. The thread is now open for submissions and will close at Midnight Eastern time on April 5th 2025. Voting will start the next day, April 6th and will close at the end of the day on April 12th. If the moderators determine that the vote is close, a 3-day runoff poll will be held. The person whose idea gets the most votes will host the 50 point task for the Spring Challenge.

The 50 point task will require:
1. Only 3 options. These options may not include more than 2 "sub options" - 6 total in the task.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and they must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

Please include your Readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by Readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.

PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments in this thread will be deleted.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1527 comments Let me start by saying I am not eligible for creating the 50 point task, since I already have a task in this seasonal challenge. I do; however, have an idea I'd like to share, if someone would like to claim it as their submission.

50.1 – Save Our Parks and Forests

The United States has seen much upheaval and dismantling of federal programs and funding under the current presidency. Our National Parks and Forests have been threatened with the major lay-off of personnel who man and protect our parks. Previously protected forests are being targeted for deforestation for lumber production. The impact on wildlife, habitat, climate, and humanity from this legislation may be devastating. Help save our parks and forests!

Read 3 books, one for each option, totaling at least 750 pgs.

Book1: How can you help our national parks? Become an advocate. Keep informed by checking out the independent, nonpartisan conservation site, “National Parks Conservation Association,” or an environmental page on Facebook, “National Park and Forests Supporters.”

For this option, read a book whose author’s first or last name can be spelled from the letters in “National Parks Conservation Association” or “National Park and Forests Supporters.” Required: State the author name and phrase it was found it.

Book 2: How can you help our national parks? Get informed with the facts. Our parks are affected by many factors, including choices made by individuals, governments, and scientists. Read a Non-Fiction book with an MPG of Environment, Climate, Politics, Nature, or Science.

Book 3: How can you help our national parks? Become a conservationist. Years ago, the “Smokey the Bear” campaign was created to help prevent wildfires. “Woodsy Owl,” an educational Forest Service program, advised us to, “Give a hoot. Don’t pollute.” The National Wildlife Federation shared a love of wildlife and the natural world with children by having a friendly raccoon, “Ranger Rick,” introduce them to the great outdoors.

For this task, read a book with a title word of 4 or more letters made from any of the target phrases or combination of phrases: “Smokey the Bear,” Woodsy Owl,” and / or “Ranger Rick.” Required: State the word and phrase or phrases used.

50.1 - April Showers Bring May Flowers

In the Northern Hemisphere the second half of the Spring SRC brings us out of the colder and/or snowy season into a time of new growth and warmer weather. However, in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, we have to get through the rain before we get the reward of beautiful Spring flowers! Let’s celebrate this second half of the Spring SRC with a task about weather and its pitfalls and rewards.

This is a three book task. Pick one option (A or B) for each of the books. The three books must have a combined page total of 750 or more pages. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.

Book 1: Showers Bring Flowers
The original phrase of “Sweet April showers do spring May flowers” is attributed to 16th century poet and farmer Thomas Tusser.
A) Read a book with a 4+ letter word formed from either the phrase “APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS” or “SWEET APRIL SHOWERS DO SPRING MAY FLOWERS” in the title/subtitle.

B) Read a book by a single author whose initials (including middle initials) are in APRIL SHOWERS or MAY FLOWERS.

Book 2: April Showers
It does seem that more and more often our April showers have become April storms, some of which are quite severe.
A) Read a book with CLIMATE CHANGE or CLIMATE CHANGE FICTION as the MPG. These books can be fiction or nonfiction.
These lists may provide inspiration for these books, but using the lists is not required:
Best Climate Change Books
Cli-Fi: Climate Change Fiction

B) Read a book with any of the following on the cover: clouds, umbrella, rain, raindrops, lightning bolt (any lightning bolt counts, not just from a storm), or a tornado (funnel cloud).
Ex.
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts The Scent of Rain and Lightning by Nancy Pickard Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon The Sweetest Thing (Lucky Harbor, #2) by Jill Shalvis Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse Revival by Stephen King A Bolt from the Blue The Epic True Story of Danger, Daring, and Heroism at 13,000 Feet by Jennifer Woodlief Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera, #1) by Jim Butcher After Oz by Gordon McAlpine What Stands in a Storm Three Days in the Worst Superstorm to Hit the South's Tornado Alley by Kim Cross

Book 3: May Flowers
Fortunately, after this stormy period, we are rewarded with a time of planting, new growth, and beautiful flowers. The town I live in celebrates with our annual Tulip Festival at the beginning of May to celebrate this time of year.
A) Read a book with GARDENING or NATURE as the MPG. These books may be fiction or nonfiction.

B) Read a book with the word TULIP, or one of the following gardening terms intact in the title, subtitle, or the author’s name: GARDEN, PLANT, WEED, WATER, PRUNE, SEED, SOIL.

These articles and lists may provide inspiration for these books, but using the lists is not required.
Best Environmental Books
Gardening Books
Gardens: Fact or Fiction Set in a Garden Books
Green Party: The Recent Rise of Nature Books

50.1 Task Complete!
We are going to be using the Spring Challenge Completed Task Thread in this group for this task.
Books must total at least 750 pages.

1. Read three different books that have been claimed in the thread. Post the Readerboard name and page number of the thread each book was found on.

2. Find any author that in the thread and enter their name on this website: https://www.literature-map.com/
Read from three different authors on the map, which could include the author you originally entered.

3. Find any three books on the thread and go to the books main page for each separate book. Use the feature Readers Also Enjoyed to pick your three books from each original book from the completed task thread. These do not need to be books you have previously read.

Or
Complete each task separately once. For option 2, you would need to choose a different author from the one you originally used. So if you choose Holly Black, you would have to use a author that shows up on the map.
