Same *sobs*

★ sᴛᴀʀ ★ᴡᴇʟᴄᴏᴍᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴍʏ ᴜɴᴅᴇʀᴡᴏʀʟᴅ Sorry for disappearing I didn't notice this got created!

I feel that we have become too dependent on technology, and this reliance is affecting everyone. While technology has its benefits, it is also one of the factors contributing to depression. According to an article, “The less you are connected with human beings in a deep, empathic way, the less you’re really getting the benefits of social interaction” (Hamlet, Paragraph 9).

Not only is this bad for our mental health, but it also distracts us from living fully and experiencing the world around us. We often spend more time interacting with virtual environments, like touching grass in Minecraft, than we do in real life. Additionally, it can be a distraction in learning environments. For example, a kid in my class kept interrupting the lesson with silly sounds from his phone. While technology can help us grow, it can also diminish our intelligence.

Although technology represented a significant improvement in our lives, it has taken away something special for many of us—our connection to life itself. Many people used to engage in hobbies like farming and baking, but with the rise of technology, we often find ourselves distracted from what we love, focusing instead on the next big trend.

i agree! technology is great, but when it starts replacing humans, then i have an issue. lmao i said the same thing in the ai topic too but genuinely: if your technology is getting in the way of your people, then there is an issue.

ever since i got personal technology i've been getting more and more addicted to it... not saying that it's bad but it can't be the only thing i do. like my dad, all he does when he isn't working, eating, or sleeping, is scroll through the twitter/x and the news. litrally the last meaningful interaction i had with him was when he was picking me up from a class. you may not realize it, but technology very quickly inavdes your personal life to a degree that's actually quite harmful. something we see in the fact that there are now ai bachelors eligible to date 😭😭

Naimallama🦙:P | 30 comments I believe we are much to dependent on technology, turn off the power and most people have no idea what to do

⋆✧Maddie ✧⋆ | 68 comments I 100% think that people are way too dependent on technology. I mean if I didn't have technology I wouldn't be able to sleep at night because I have to sleep to white noise, anytime the power goes off I can't sleep until it comes back on. People rely on it for simple tasks these days like turning on the lights, locking their doors, and controlling the AC/heat. Like we've become so dependent that people won't walk a couple of steps to do the things I listed above. Also, people don't really handwrite things anymore they type, a lot of people don't read physical copies of books, the read ebooks or listen to audiobooks. People don't even want to collect physical media items anymore like DVDs or CDs (I don't complain though cause I look for those things.) I mentioned internet type things though. For those who live in America, did you know that many other countries don't use the AC? How would you survive without that technology. Or what about TV for those who enjoy TV, or even something as simple as lighting. We rely so heavily on technology that many people wouldn't be able to live if we lost the internet forever let alone the power. Many people don't know how to cook over a fire, or build a stable shelter, or even do something as simple as entertain themselves without technology and I believe that is sad, I'm only 18 and I can see how much we rely on technology.

I think a lot of Americans, including myself, really take for granted how privileged we are to have access to these things compared to poorer countries 😭 thank you for bringing this up

I agree that we do take advantage of it, I myself am guilty of that too, I don't even think about it until I see topics or someone is talking about it. So I'm just as bad as anyone else I guess

charli marie ౨ৎ Absolutely we are too dependent. You rarely see kids going outside anymore without their phone or ipad. Is it good for communication? yes but people have become so dependent on them that without it they wouldn’t know what to do. I can’t hang out with my friends without them checking their phones every 10 seconds. I wish it were like the 70s/80s where friends would ride their bikes around, go to arcades, go to skating rinks, and enjoy face to face human engagement and actually enjoy activities without technology being constantly glued to their hand. People are forgetting about the beauty of the world, we don’t look around and observe anymore because we are too sucked into the technological world.

Thibaud Sanchez | 11 comments We are too dependent on the electronics. I am seeing first hand with us not able to have a conversation. The good uses of it is you can do audiobooks/podcasts like when you are working and doing activities like knitting. It helps me to learn something while I shelve books at the library.

i don't think the ac thing is said often enough!! and sometimes it's better to use something else too, like literally if you just open the windows, your house will cool down immediately, no electricity bill or long wait needed. and if you're in a car, opening the windows is really fun just for the heck of it...if you've never went down the highway with open windows, you're really missing out

exactly!! and i've seen this a lot too, like i've literally only had a phone for a month and a half, but i already feel bare without it, even though i never felt that way before.

What about for people who don't have opportunities in-person to make friends and find love? Wouldn't you say that meeting people online and communicating, and having friends through there, is beneficial if they don't have that opportunity elsewhere? Yes, that means we are dependent on technology for our social lives, but is that inherently bad?

it really is. like when i was in sixth grade, one of the kids in my class (a girl) was having sex with a 19 YEAR old, and was bringing condoms to school to share with another girl in my grade. We Were ONLY 11

also feel free to argue with me on this but i think condoms are okay, i'd rather a middle schooler be having mostly safe sex ("mostly" because obviously nothing works 100% of the time) than be pregnant or have an sti.

ofc condoms r ok, but a middle school girl should not have to use them in the first place

agreed
especially if it fails to work, and also because i don't think an 11-year-old girl can fully consent to doing that with a 19-year-old.

yeah they can’t becuase their brains arent even close to being fully developed yet

i mean it's not just that, your brain isn't developed until you're 25, it's also like hormones making you horny in a situation where the person who's 19 should definitely know better.

love this!! i mean of course it does some harm, social media is still social media and sometimes it eats at me, but it has done way more good than harm for me and im pretty sure a lot of other people. imo it's just how you use it. are you constantly scrolling through reels or shorts, or are you making genuine connections or smth?

YES EXACTLY. I spend a lot more time debating, helping people on my mental health group, and messaging friends and my girlfriend than I do doomscrolling!

message 44: by victoria (new)

victoria | 67 comments we’re definitely over dependent on technology but honestly it’s not really our fault. social media is meant to be addictive but we still have too acknowledge that it becomes excess. like sure online connections can be genuine but it gets to the point where you need in person friends to actually see face to face and make memories with

message 45: by Sai :), Assistant Moderator (new)

Sai :) (the climate catastrophe is real) | 1897 comments Mod
social media is purposely designed to be addictive, the people who made it meant for you to spend hours on it. there's a reason reels and shorts can only be so long, to keep giving that dopamine burst of opening something new. and the track everything you watch so they can give you content you're more likely to click on.

Khadijah *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ | 73 comments I agree with that.

I had a conversation with my older sister, her girlfriend, and my little sister and we were all talking about how people are way too dependent on technology. Social media is a really large space and just the algorithm is really good at putting out new things for you to watch and consume. For example there are subdivisions in the booktok community, music community, and lifestyle content creators. I think I spend way too long on social media especially tiktok. I will spend 2 hours on it, not knowing how much time has gone by.

With the rise of AI I feel like sometimes I lack critical thinking skills at school because February/March I used it way too much and I stopped using it as often but its detrimental to my ability to comprehend things.
