Nick wants to obtain the Presidency on his own. Nick was handpicked as VP because the previous guy was sick. Nick has off the charts popularity with voters, but he is still ambivalent about the whole thing because he feels that his friend, John, should be here, not him.
Honestly, if Nick didn't want to be president, he wouldn't have taken the position of vice president. I think he is frustrated with his limited duties. For several books, it has been obvious that the Force is taking the series in the direction of putting Nick in the White House. Who doesn't want a First Lady fighting crime on the streets?
Me! The First Lady fighting crime on the streets is so far from reality as to be incomprehensible. I can suspend reality a lot of the time, but that is just beyond and why I won't continue with the next series.
I agree with Sharon. If he didn't want to be president, he would not have taken the VP job. That said, he wants to win on his own merits rather than by default. The First Lady crime fighter is ridiculous. Like Anita, my ability to suspend disbelief with this series has come to an end.
