John Brubaker | 4 comments My mom got this book for me from the library when I was home sick with the chicken pox back in 1983 or 1984. It was a kids fantasy book where an old(er) man befriends an orphan boy and I believe they go off on adventures aboard the mans sailing boat. I think at the end of the book the man adopts the boy. I'm also pretty sure there was a sequel to the book.

Can you remember what made the book a fantasy? Was there magic, magical creatures, etc?

I say it's a fantasy book because it takes place in a new land/world, it does not take place on the earth. I believe the boy was a young teenager. Unfortunately I don't remember any specific adventures. I believe at the end of the book, they returned to the mans home and that is when he 'adopted' the boy.

I feel like the way it was written, their different 'adventures' were almost like a collection of short stories rather than one continuous story.

I can't say for sure, but I am pretty sure it was just the two of them, so it wouldn't have been a large sailing ship.

I don't know if I am remembering this correctly, but I believe in the sequel, that the old man dies. I know I didn't find the second book nearly as good and I did not finish reading it.

Natasha | 2 comments Could it be Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain (by Edward Ardizzone)? I believe Little Tim at Sea is a book series with different adventures in each book.

The MC was an older boy...maybe early teens?!? If I recall correctly, the adventures did not revolve around the boat, it was just the means by which they traveled.
