message 779: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22378 comments It's fitting that Jed was closest to the pin on the Grand Final score and he earns another $20.00 for the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

Our final table looks like this:

Jed - 1 (24)
Philip - 1 (27)
Anita - 1 (29)
Suzy - 1 (40)
Steve - 0 (62)
SussexWelsh - 0 (67)
Tim - 0 (68)
Duke - 0 (71)
Val - 0 (74)

I have worked out all the donations and I hope to start doing them online in the next couple of days. I'll give you all the details soon.

theDuke | 6514 comments I just realised, that after, what....10 or so years of participating in this AFL group, that when it comes to the final play-offs....i am really am crap at it! I was convinced the Cats would do it...having smacked the Lions in the opening week of the finals, plus the injuries Brisbane had...but nope, the mighty Lions had the biggest roar in the battle of the felines. Congratulations to Brisbane, back to back champions.

Like many, I was expecting the grand finals teams to be Cats versus Collingwood or Adelaide, but these finals play-offs rarely play out as one would expect, but it does keep it exciting. Well done Brisbane.

I didn't get to listen in to the Grand Final, but the end scores were impressive for the winning side, all the pundits said it would be a tight game, and it appeared that was the case for the first 3 quarters, but the roaring Lions took off in that final term. The pundits said the winning side would win it by no more than 4 goals.....how wrong they were!

Val, a big thank you to you once again for running another great season of tipping, your dedication and generosity is, as ever, commendable. As for me, i hope to do better next season! I've yet to win this tipping comp, the ambition is still there!! ;-) I pledge my own donations to the UK equivalent charities and sight disorder dedicated science organisations here, as and when i can. As ever, i hope that one day a cure can be found for not just my own disorder, Retinitis Pigmentosis, but for all the visual diseases and disorders that exist. I fear in my case, being a genetic disorder, such a cure won't come soon enough, but i live and hope.

I am currently doing the AFLW tipping comp on the main site itself....sadly not many folks appear to follow the women's game, just 14k involved in the tipping side of things, compared to well over 400k in the men's season....may that change, it's about time. I'm doing quite well in that one, in the top 7th, hoping to make the top 1000 soon. It's a different game for the ladies, fewer rounds (just 10 and playoffs) shorter quarters, different venues, and leading the way with a clean sheet thus far in round 7, are the hopping Kangaroos! Followed by the Demons, Hawthorn, Blues, Crows, Swans, Lions, & Cats. My poorly Giants though, are languishing in the bottom 4, along with Collingwood & Gold Coast. But there is one team that is consistent in both comps; Richmond are 2nd to last in the men's ladder, but in the women's, dead last! West Coast are doing okay, currently sitting in 9th.

The mighty Lions keep their trophy for another year, i await for the new season, when we can begin all over again!

Thank you again Val, and i look forward to battling it out in the next season with yous all, once more. Until next March then, ta ra!

Jed Fkn Smoko! | 254 comments couldn't betray my team on the final 🦁 win or lose. What happened with your prediction dad? bit "far out" that one 👀

thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable season Val, I'll enjoy Brisbane doing the treble next year

message 782: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22378 comments Brisbane have done it before - see 2001, 2002 and 2003!

I was very, very drunk at the time, obviously ;-)

Val H. | 22378 comments I've done all the calculations and I've made all the deposits (except for Duke's - see below). Here's the wash-up. With the monies set aside for re-distribution, I topped up everyone to a round figure.

Jed - $180.00 - Great Barrier Reef Foundation (approx. £84.50)
Steve - $180.00 - Backpack Bed For Homeless (approx. £84.50)
Suzy - $150.00 - Friends With Dignity (approx. £70.50)
Tim - $100.00 - Koala Hospital - Port Macquarie (approx. £47.00
** Duke - $100.00 - Centre For Eye Research Australia (approx £47.00)
Tazz - $60.00 - Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria (approx. £28.00)
Anita - $60.00 - The Mirabel Foundation (approx. £28.00)
Val - $60.00 - Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (approx. £28.00)
Philip - $60.00 - Canteen (approx. £28.00) - (less $30.00 paid earlier in the year so approx £14.00)
SussexWelsh - $60.00 - Save The Bilby Fund (approx. £28.00)

After topping up, there was still $80.00 left so I split that between Pankind - an illness currently affecting this household - and Dementia Australia - in memory of Lez. Both get $40.00 (approx £19.00)

** I've yet to make the donation to Duke's charity because they've got one of those double up days coming on October 9th so I'll deposit it then and they'll have $200!!

So that's it from me for the time being. Hopefully we can do it all over again next year if everyone's up for it. In the meantime I'll keep plugging away at Mark's Premier League tipping comp and be as abysmal there as I have been with the AFL.

Thanks everyone for your continued support.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 559 comments I cannot thank you enough Val for your generosity and time and effort you put into this competition with people from around the globe.
The Lions proved a lot of people wrong, and they will likely be pushing for the treble next season. I agree Duke, the support for the women's version is sadly very low despite a huge uplift and skills shown especially over the past two seasons.
It has proved to be a good time to be in Brisbane if you love sport with the Broncos winning the NRL premiership in what was one of the best games of rugby League I have ever seen last Sunday. That was their first win in 19 seasons and came back from 10 points down at half time despite two game ending injuries in the second half to two of their stars.
I have not fully checked this out but am fairly certain this is the first time the two major premierships in sports here have been held in the same city. Sydney and Melbourne must be distraught.
Rugby Union is a distant third to Rugby League and AFL which disappoints me but mostly this is won every year by a NZ team. The Reds last won it in 2011 and I recall the Waratahs and Brumbies have both won the title in the last 15 years.
I so look forward to next season which will be more "ball up" than ever as the centre bounce is likely being put out to pasture. I think this is a great shame as it will make the ruck far more predictable with the ball being thrown straight up. The sheer sight of the centre bounce sets this game apart from all other sports and has been around since the beginning.
The subs are also going to be dispensed with and there will be five interchanges rather than four to compensate. I think this one makes sense.
To all my fellow tippers have a great close season as I struggle on with the devious EPL comp run by Sussex as Val alluded too.
