This is a fictional book about Dutch artist Judith Leyster. Judith was born in 1609 and was the first female artist to be admitted to the artist's guild of Haarlam. She also achieved the status of master artist which allowed her to sell her paintings. The author does a great job of showing the difficulties a female artist faced in the 17th century. It also has an additional story-line of Judith's friend, Maria deGrebber, who was also an artist. Maria stopped painting because she wanted to spend the time practicing her Catholic faith in a time when it was difficult to do so.
