YA/ Children's? Fantasy - Main character goes on a magical adventure and gains a magic tattoo around one wrist. Read around 2006-2007.

I don't remember much more beyond what's in the title, unfortunately. I read it as a kid, it was a library book, I was a voracious reader and a lot of the details have faded.

STUFF I'M SURE ON: I remember that at the same time the main character got the tattoo put on him, he discovered his absentee father had a similar one across his whole body. The tattoo was called a "tryst" or "trist", and the companions who joined him in the magical otherworld he went to found it particularly notable for one reason or another. I am certain it was the first in a series (which I never found any further books from, but it said on the cover).

STUFF I'M UNSURE ON: The main character and his mother had moved recently, and the inciting incident of the adventure was going to his new school. The tattoo came from a strange, floating book. The companions he went on an adventure on were talking animals. The main character returned from this adventure to find his (new?) home and his mother under attack, and used the powers granted by the tattoo to fight off the attackers.

I know this isn't much to go on, but I hope someone knows what book this is, and/or others in its series. I've been searching for it for years, it keeps popping up in the back of my mind.
