I don't know if this is a short story or a novel, I only remember this beginning. The way he overhears them is he goes outside--maybe to a well, or an outhouse--and overhears them at an open window. The servant family doesn't want to give up the home they have taken over in the Jewish family's absence, hence their plan to kill the son who has returned.
