Near-ish future Sci-Fi: People go through a portal and don't return. Takes place in NYC and WW2 France. First of a series? Published ~2017-2020. Spoilers.

People have been disappearing through a portal (or similar device) and not returning. So many that conditions have become post-apocalyptic. Most of the action follows a small group of people and takes place in NYC. The reader follows one person who goes through the portal and ends up in France with an US army squad during WW2 (he may embody a french translator) -- includes a scene at a french farm. Book ends (I think) with the group in NYC being chased by dogs or wolves. Believe it's first in a series and was published ~2017-2020.
