trying understanding the end of the book

No Exit by Taylor Adams:
It was a great read and I enjoyed the characters.
However, the end is confusing. It seems like Darby got shot by a police officer and died but then in the end she is holding Jay's hand. So I am not sure if she is still alive.
Same with Ashley the book said Jay missed but yet he is dead.

Its my thought that Darby survived the shooting by the officer. They wanted to make it look as though she died for a moment for shock value.
Ashley died at the hands of Jay.
Ashley died at the hands of Jay.
She survived at end where she gets prints of her mother gravestone it was misleading
