This is a prequal to The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and an epic story of John and Mary Sawtelle starting their dog kennel in rural, royal northern Wisconsin. A cast of interesting characters such as Elbow, Frank with a prosthetic arm and leg, Ida who has and gives premonitions in touch and a cast full of specially bread and trained dogs.

It is hard to describe exactly what this book is other than just an epic leading up to the retelling of Hamlet in The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, but I love the idea that person's environment and circumstances influence their actions.

Though not as good as the sequel, this book was fun, exciting, interesting, and thought provoking.
