► UNSOLVED: One specific book > Older YA Historical based Fantasy series with realistic tones. Follows a Viking boy who I believe is the son of mistress or slave? And deals with his relationship to his father?? Read around 2010. Spoiler.

Theo | 5 comments Honestly it’s hard to remember much cause I read this one time at the library and half the book was ripped out.

I think he was a mistresses/slaves son. And his father had a dispute with someone regarding land and holdings. And eventually his father died. And the family had to decide who would go with the father to the afterlife and the main characters mom volunteered and essentially killed herself??
But I think the brother (from the actual wife) ended up dying somehow?? Or someone took over his father’s land. And the main character resolves himself to getting it back.

I know it was the first book in the series. But unsure how many books there was

Mateusz | 19 comments The main character of this series is viking-like boy whose mother was a former slave, but I do not remember much to be said about father, especially mother killing herself (still very alive). So it is probably different book then the one you looking for, but memory tend to be a little wonky over time, So I put it here just in case:

The Outcasts

Adele | 1431 comments This keeps making me think of Hakon of Rogen's Saga, though that is probably too old. The book can be read online at OpenLibrary.org. The main character, Hakon, is not the biological child of a slave, but his mother dies giving birth to him and he has a slave woman as a wet nurse. Hakon thinks of the slave's daughter as a sister. Hakon's father was the ruler of an island and the land was taken and Hakon's father killed and a lot of the book is about Hakon trying to get back control of the island. There is a sequel: A Slave's Tale
