Sarah I Hi, guys! My name is Sarah, and I'm a freshman at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. I joined this site a couple months ago, and so far..I haven't found that much to do, but I really want to participate in discussions and meet new people. If anyone would like to add me as a friend, that would be cool. I actually haven't read a lot lately, which makes me sad. But hopefully, I won't be too busy with classes so I can check out from the school library from time to time. I'm a big theatre geek and love Shakespeare. I tend to stick to one kind of genre when reading, but I would love to explore more genres.

Sashana- Do you have a college picked out yet?"

Hey Kimberly thanks for the welcome. My ultimate goal is to go to college out of state but I know it’s really expensive. I would love to attend a large university but I’ll apply to some smaller ones as well. So far my top choices are Florida State University, University of North Florida, Nova South-Eastern University, University of Central Florida, University of Washington (Seattle campus) Seattle University, Spellman…The list goes on and on and on.

Paranormal romance sounds interesting! Any titles you suggest?

Kate (literarykate) Hi, I'm Kate and I just graduated from undergrad with a Bachelor's in American Studies and minors in history and art history. I'm currently looking for jobs and thinking about going back to grad school in a year or so for library science. I joined Goodreads because I've had a lot of free time to read now that I'm out of college.

Danya | 13 comments Hey everybody, I'm Danya - I recently graduated from university (majored in psychology) and am now considering switching into the editing/publishing field, because I love books so much! In terms of reading I like YA, specifically fantasy, dystopian and historical, and I am also a fan of some classics (Jane Austen anyone?)

Hey Dayna, welcome. I would really love to work in the editing/publishing field also. What would you have to major in to do that?

Well, I'm not an expert on it but at least in Canada, there isn't one particular major that's needed for the editing/publishing field. I think a lot start as English majors though! Also, in Canada there are a couple of universities that offer certificate programs in publishing, so that's a way to get a more formal education in the field. Apparently experience (ie. through internships, etc.) is really valuable in this industry.

Adam | 83 comments Hello,

I'm going back to school for another degree. I just started last year and I should graduate (for the 2nd time in May of 2011). My first degree is in Finance/Accounting and Economics. I worked in that industry for a while, but I really didn't like it at all. So I started teaching myself mathematics and now I'm majoring in Applied Mathematics & Physics. It's intense, but it's way more interesting. I'll probably go right on to get my Master's once I finish this, not sure if I will do Applied Math or Physics... or both.

I like reading a lot of science fiction, various non-fiction books on math and physics, philosophy books and things on science in general. I also like fantasy and things like that.

Chantal (chantalrouette) | 6 comments Hey, I'm Chantal. I'm 18 and a music major, English minor. I'm not only new to this group, but the site in general, so I'm hoping to meet some cool people here that I can be 'friends' with.

In my spare time, I like doing anything music related, whether its listening to my favourite bands/artists, writing, or playing music. I also love to read realistic fiction novels (although I do enjoy Harry Potter quite a bit). My favourite author of all time is John Green.

Nice to meet you all. :)

message 367: by Sai (new)

Sai (dnsaikumar) Hi... I'm Sai from India.I just entered in to 20.....I am also new to this site and new to this group... From my childhood onwards i used to read short stories a lot..upto age of 16 i can't realise the enjoyment in books...But now I'm feeling a new world in reading books... I love to share my feelings about books,education,sports,...etc
Apart from this i'm studying B.TECH(electronics and communicational engineering) to be graduated in one year.... When my semester exams are arraived i usually stop reading for 1 or 2 months and when in holidays usually i complete 2 books a week....I used to store cuttings of stories and books which i like most...I usually get anger on my friends when they do not return my favourite books as they lend books to read... That's all about me.....thank you....

message 368: by Johnathan (new)

Johnathan (ethanj) | 8 comments welcome sai! i feel the same way about books.

message 369: by Erin (new)

Erin (ersiku) Hi all! I'm Erin, and I've been lurking around this group for a while. Sorry...I know that's not cool. Life has been busy lately, but it's calming down and I hope to turn more attention to the online book community (because let's face it...it ROCKS!).

About me: I'm 27, originally from Ohio, but I've just moved to Pittsburgh, via Albany via Boston via Rochester. I finished my undergraduate in 2005, but I've been taking classes here and there ever since and plan to return for a second degree in 2011. I'm hoping I still count as a college student? Maybe?

I've always loved reading, but for the past three years (before I moved) I worked in an independent bookstore and took a few English classes at a local university, and I definitely went from casual reader to obsessive book nut in that time. In the few weeks since I have moved and left all that, I've been feeling pretty book (and book talk) deprived. I'm quickly discovering that, with book blogs, GoodReads, and LibraryThing, I can get my fill. I've been trying to be more active on my own blog, Erin Reads, too.

I love fiction, YA, memoir, travel writing, and audiobooks best. I am trying to get myself to read more classics and some nonfiction as well. I tend to prefer gorgeous writing and realistic characters to insane plots.

Hm, so that's me! I'm happy to be here, I hope I still qualify, and I look forward to talking books with all of you!

Kjerstin (kjerstinkaye) Hey Caro! I love Gilmore Girls too! I'm in the process of re-watching the whole series of Gilmore Girls for the third time. It just keeps getting better!

Welcome!

message 375: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten I'm Kirsten, I recently graduated with a degree in Environmental Science and am contemplating grad school. It's unclear at this point exactly what I will study, but several paths have been presented to me as good options to pursue.

I read predominantly non fiction, but I do find that from time to time I have to read a few popular books so that I can keep up with what all my friends and neighbors are talking about.

Monaliza Marcelo (theprymmadonna) | 8 comments hello to all..!

i am monaliza marcelo, a college student here in the philippines, i am 18 years old taking up Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and in my third year.

i love to read, fictions are my favorites, and even during my busy days in schools and duty hours, i somehow manage to squeeze reading during breaks and library hours...

aside from reading, i love to help people, i take my neighbors blood pressure and make a health plan and teaching for them, and that helps me too, i get to know people well and i get to practice my skills from them..

i hope to be friends with you all.. thanks

Steven Mankin (chefsteveo) | 3 comments Hi guys and gals, my name is Steven and I am a culinary school grad from California. I just got back from a monthlong trip to Thailand.

This year has been all about the classics for me, and lately I have been getting into nautical tales.

message 378: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (bookwormlove666) | 6 comments Hi! I'm Jessica. I love YA books, I think I always will, I just started to read some romance novels too, but I keep going back to YA. I like to write, but nothing is published (I'm no good, and I tend to start writing a few things at once and never finishing any of them). But I always have a book with me, wherever I go (even if I know I won't have time to read it, it's weird). I think this group is going to be really cool for more ideas on what to read next (even though my bookshelf at home has probably close to 70 books that I still need to read on it now). I have an addiction to books, and I keep buying more even though I haven't finished the ones I have already, but I'm starting to read a lot more now that I was in the past couple years.

I am a full time sophomore in college, and I work two part time jobs. I just got my drivers license last summer (I put off learning to drive for a few years, but I don't regret it, I think less 16 year olds should be on the road).

Anyway, I am currently reading 4 books, I start too many at once, but when reading books, I do actually finish them. I have a few favorite authors that I will read anything they write, but I will take recommendations for new books too, I like reading new types of books since every author is different.

- Jessica

message 379: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Welcome to the group Jessica! You're going to fit right in with us. I'm the same way with books, I can't help buying more even though I have a ton on my bookshelves that still need to be read.

message 380: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (nursejessica) | 3 comments I'm Jessica, I'm brand new to this group and site. I have been obsessed with reading/books since I was young. I enjoy all types of books. Recently started reading books by Charlaine Harris, and hope to start the Sookie Stackhouse series as soon as I can. This website is exactly what I've been looking for! I enjoy reading book reviews and book suggestions, so add me as a friend!

message 381: by Madge (last edited Nov 04, 2010 04:44PM) (new)

Madge (madge_the_bibliomaniac) Hey everyone, I'm Madison. I'm 21, in college full time, and I have a 2 year old daughter. I've been married for 3 years, and I'm a bookaholic, though I haven't had as much time to read over the past 2 years, due to my busy varying schedule. Thankfully, I'm finally getting back into my rhythm of reading. I've only read somewhere around 5-7 books this year, with my original goal being 50 books this year. Hopefully I'll get up to at least 15 before the end of the year.

I consider myself an Eclectic Pagan, after years of religious research. Right now, I'm in college trying to raise my GPA so that I can get into the Nursing program next year. After completing the program, I want to transfer to a college that offers an RN to MSN program, so that I can be a midwife, which has been my dream for almost 10 years.

I'm sort of an open book about my opinions and things, and I love meeting new people who share a common interest with me. If anyone decides that they want to get to talk sometimes or something, feel free to send me a message or something. Sorry this got so long!

message 386: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 279 comments Okay wow, I have been a member of this group for a while and never introduced my self, kind of rude sorry.

I'm Melissa, I am currently in limbo with school and classes. My husband is in the Air Force and I had to stop taking classes in Colorado when we moved to Ohio. I was taking classes at a university near by but the school's physics program and rotations of classes didn't fit with our time period here. So right now I am not taking classes and I am not enjoying that. I am currently working on mt BSorA in physics. I am not planning on using my degree in physics moving so much, so I am planning on getting a masters in Library Science. I worked in a library for 9 years in Colorado and loved every minute of it. We have a few more months here in Ohio while my husband finished up his masters and we should be finding out soon where we will be moving to next.

I love reading all sorts of books. Some of my favorite authors are Margaret Atwood, Alice Hoffman, and J.K. Rowling. I love re-reading books and listening to books on cd. I have a huge problem with buying books. If I don't stop we are going to go over our moving weight limit. ;-)

message 388: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (hedgehoggal) Hi! I'm Elizabeth and I'm 19 and a full-time college student studying anthropology and history. I love, love, love to read and have done so since I can remember. I love meeting people who love to read as much as I do and I also like book clubs because I am usually challenged to stretch my "horizons" and read books I probably would not have before.
I love reading all sorts of books but mostly enjoy mysteries and historical fiction. I love to sing and read (of course) and hope to get into forensic anthropology...maybe. :D

message 389: by Ildar (new)

Ildar | 1 comments Hello!

I am glad to have joined this group and everything about here just seems to be so nice and welcoming.

My name is Ildar, I am a former student of Philology at CSU, a university in Russia. Being unemployed right now I spend some of my time reading and self-studying.

I am a fan of English-language literature - classic and modern. My favorite writers are Jonathan Coe, Zadie Smith, Salman Rushdie, Nick Hornby; Paul Auster, Chuck Palahniuk, Jack Kerouac. I also like Charles Dickens and Herman Melville very much. It's not the whole list, however. My dream is to sink my teeth into works of David Foster Wallace someday and the likes.

This day I spent so much time reading other people's book reviews (which activity I enjoy)before finding this group. I like to learn about other people's reception of different books (preferably the ones I read myself); to discuss various matters, meet new people, and enlarge my experience in general.

I am open to new acquaintances. Feel free to contact me.

yours, warmly, Ildar Valeyullin.

P.S. my age is 23(just forgot to say it in the beginning).

message 390: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 279 comments Welcome Ildar, when you mentioned CSU I thought you went to the University of Colorado where I went, then of course I kept reading! I love the virety of locations where people live in this group. I have a friend who is currently deployed right now who loves the Russian culture and actually learned to speak Russian.

message 391: by Bob (new)

Bob Prophet (prophetbob) Hello all! I don't believe I've introduced myself yet on here. The name is Bob and I graduated from college with a B.S. a couple years ago and am battling student loan debt (as is so common these days). My major was Sociology (with attention paid to several other social sciences and criminal justice thrown in the mix).

My hobbies include reading (mostly nonfiction), writing, occasionally painting, and drinking beer. :) I work in the home services market in a position that doesn't require a college education, but remain because self-employment is much preferred to sitting in a cubicle somewhere answering phones, IMO.

My spare time is partly dedicated to volunteering in the local peace-building, interfaith community raising awareness on issues ranging from corporate dominance of society to organic agriculture and sustainability. We show films to acquaint people with these topics along with participating in other forms of activism.

Music speaks to my soul and is an important part of each and every day.

Thanks and I look forward to interacting with others in this group! :)

message 392: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) Welcome Bob! I totally empathize with the student loan debt. And I think everyone here can relate to music speaking to the soul :)

Hope you enjoy our group!

message 393: by Bob (new)

Bob Prophet (prophetbob) Thanks for the welcoming, Anastasia. Student loan debt does appear to the bane of our generation unfortunately.

message 394: by Holly (new)

Holly Hello. I'm Holly. I'm 21 and a psychology major (history minor) at Santa Clara University. Historical fiction is my favorite genre to read, especially when it's about the Tudor family. I am brand new to this site. This group seems really fun. I'm excited to know some people my age who like reading for fun and not just for school work!

message 395: by Bob (new)

Bob Prophet (prophetbob) Hi Holly,

Welcome! :) Since you are a psychology major, have you ever read the works of Dr. Thomas S. Szasz? He has an interesting book comparing the modern mental health movement with the Inquisition, discussing how both were intended to root out dissidence and questioning who gets to decide what is "normal" for the rest? You might appreciate it, if only as food for thought in looking at the mental health movement from a historical perspective.

Peace be with you!

I'm 19 and majoring in communications & business. I love to read, but unfortunately don't have much time. Or much space in the backpack for that matter. I read just about everything depending on the time of year or how stressed out I am. Looking forward to seeing what others are reading and maybe getting some suggestions on what to read now that I am on break and will finally have time to read again!
