Chrissy Ziccarelli Hello everyone!

I'm Chrissy, 22 and from Chicago. I'm technically not a college student anymore because I graduated two weeks ago(eek!). The upside is I now have a lot more time to read for enjoyment, so I figured I'd join this group to have people to discuss all my literary adventures with. No one else in my house is as voracious a reader as I am, so it gets kinda lonely.

My favorite book of all time is The Phantom Tollbooth. I'm pretty sure it's the only book I've reread. Ever.

The book that has most recently made an impression on me was The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. I really like short story/essay collections and this one just took my breath away.

Other random things: I was an economics major in college, but wish I had discovered my passion for sexuality and women's studies earlier so I could have made those my majors. I also dance. A lot. I was trained in jazz/tap/ballet, but now I mostly prefer hip-hop and bhangra.

The end. Yay!

Welcome Chrissy!! You are in good company here when it comes to being a voracious reader! :)

Brittaney (brittuhkneeduh) | 2 comments Hey guys, I am kinda new to the group. I joined awhile back but have recently gotten into the swing of things around here. Now how rude of me to not introduce myself!?! My name is Brittaney, I am in my third year of my undergRADuate studies. Although I will not be traveling to any exotic places this summer I have decided to dedicate my time to volunteer work and leisure READING (finally). After all the reading assignments I get slammed with during school it's nice to appreciate actual literature and not academic text.

Krish Gonzalez | 11 comments Hey guys, I'm Krish, I have been around for a while now but I have only just found the time to sit down, relax and really appreciate the group. I'll certainly be joining in more from now-- and not just silently lurking.

Well, I am 24 and just completed my second year of my Bsc although I already another one (long story!). Obviously love reading and finally have the time to actually get stuck into a few books. right now I'm reading The Purple Hibiscus and its pretty good going so far! I'll also be joining in on the monthly reads too.

Will be great to get to know you guys!

Tori Bryan | 13 comments Hi! I'm Rosie, a junior (gulp!) Theatre major at my dream school. I joined a while back but never got the chance to be active at all here, but summer is when I cram in as much pleasure reading as possible so I'm here now!

I'm slowly but surely making my way through a lot of book lists on listsofbests.com which is great because I love challenges and it's giving me clear goals of what to read. It's also forcing me to read books I haven't because I just didn't think they were very "me" when in actuality, they SO are!

The rest of my time this summer will be (hopefully) spent volunteering at my hometown's professional theatre company. Yay for future internship references!

I truly do love to get lost in books, and look forward to reading the books on your list, and the books that I have missed so far. The general genres that I enjoy are mystery, romance, and from time to time a little bit of sci fi. I look forward to reading with all of you :]

Ash (campcreekpunk) Hello, I just joined this group today. I'm an English major at the University of Iowa and I think this group is fabulous. I'm just trying to figure everything out right now and poke around a bit. I have a blog called English Major's Junk Food where I talk about what I'm reading and reading for fun and for school, similar to what this group is all about. I'm halfway done with undergrad now and I'm planning on going to library school after I graduate.

Here is a link to my blog if you're interested: http://www.englishmajorjunkfood.com

message 276: by Steph (new)

Steph Hey, I'm new to this site as well, and I can't believe it took me this long to find!
My name is Steph and I'm originally from New York, went to HS in Boston, go to college in Atlanta, and right now I am in Barcelona for 10 weeks - so, I'm kind of all over the place.
I'm a computer science major so, I love to read as an escape after a lot of coding and what not. I love fiction, usually about women, that I can get lost in.
I've got plenty of time to read in Spain and my kindle that gives me access to a bunch of books (in English!) so I've been searching for some new stuff to read. Some of my most memorable and influencial reads are A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith, Beloved by Toni Morrison and The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway.
Love what I've seen in this group thus far, can't wait to see which books yall recommend!

My majors are English with concentrations in Literature and technical/professional writing, and History with a concentration in world/international history. I've lived in MD for about 5 years now, but I grew up in Utah, so I consider that to be my real home. Reading is my favorite thing to do, and I just wish I had more time for outside of class reading while I'm at college.

I just recently joined goodreads.com thanks to a coworker's recommendation!

message 295: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I'm an Anglophile, as well! When I was about 14 to 16, I was completely obsessed with Elizabeth Tudor, and I made a pilgrimage to her tomb in Westminster, the tree at Hatfield House where she found out she was queen (it's actually a new one planted in the same spot as the old one), etc. etc. This was before the sort of Tudor craze that happened with all the historical fiction books (like Phillipa Gregory) and TV shows.

Anyway... I'm Sarah. I'm 21, from Houston. I'm going to be a senior this fall, double majoring in philosophy and anthropology.
Some of my favorite books are...
-The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
-Between the Bridge and the River by Craig Ferguson
-Confessions of a Pagan Nun by Kate Horsley
-Lamb by Christopher Moore
And I also like reading books by Karen Armstrong, Hermann Hesse, and Marya Hornbacher.

message 297: by Mandla (new)

Mandla (dublem) | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name is Mandla, I'm 18, and currently studying at the University of Nottingham (just finished my first year in Architecture, but switching to English, because I can't bear doing anything else!) I love epic books (in the original sense of the word), the sort which encompass entire worlds, and are stuffed full of adventure, discovery and excitement. This does mean I tend to drift towards your scifi sorta books, but I'm by no means closed of to other genres.

Some of my favourite books:
- Dune, Frank Herbert
- The Life of Pi, Yann Martel
- The Foundation Trilogy, Isaac Asimov
- The Shadow of the Wind, Carlos Ruiz Zafon
- Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card

Anyway, I'm really keen on expanding my tastes, so any recommendations are more than welcome!

message 298: by Anika (new)

Anika (anlynn) | 106 comments Hey Mandla! I've been hearing good things about The Shadow of the Wind recently so I really want to read it soon! I have a friend who's reading it right now and is really enjoying it!

And I'm an English major too! I know what you mean, I can't imagine doing anything else despite the fact that people tried to talk me into more "practical" majors.

message 299: by Blair (last edited Jul 12, 2010 06:20AM) (new)

Blair Hi! I'm Blair, 19, and will be a sophomore at a small private college in Maryland where I am studying biology in hopes to attend med-school and eventually become a pediatrician. I love being active, traveling, spending time with friends, and of course diving into a good book. I joined this group to see what other people my age are reading and to join in on discussions. I'm very excited! I'll read just about anything. I love a good beach read and "chic lit" but I also love dystopian literature and historical fiction.
