Alessia (allieonthemoon) Thank you all! :)
Yes, Kimberly living here is amazing some times..and utterly frustrating some others. You just have to find some kind of balance, and leave as soon as you can (that's what I'm planning to do at least!)

Alicia (amazingact21) Hi everybody!
I just discovered this group about five minutes ago. My name is Alicia, and I'm currently living in Florida. I'm a sophmore in college, just barely shy of my A.A. degree and working my way up to a Bachelor's in Elementary Education. I spend a lot of my time in classrooms doing observation, but I still find plenty of time to read. I discovered reading was fun in the fourth grade and haven't stopped since.
Hope to see everyone around the threads!

So you are going to school to be a teacher? Cool! What made you choose that?

Hi Kimberly! I've actually known I've wanted to be a teacher since I was eight years old. It's "what I wanted to be when I grew up" and throughout my teenage years I worked with kids and the passion never faded.

Welcome Alicia!! I have so many relatives in Florida-- Tampa, St. Augustine, Gainsville. What part are you from?

I live in the northwest region, around the Pensacola area, but I understand about a lot of relatives in Florida. I've got family spread out all over the state

Kelly A. | 499 comments Jamie - I am from St. Augustine, my parents still live there. It's nice for vacations, but just awful to live in permanently!

That's great! One of my close friends is the same way. Her dad was a teacher and she always knew she wanted to do the same thing.

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments Kelly, I went to St. Augustine early last spring and I loved it there! It seemed like it would be an amazing place to live. But I guess the town must get overrun with annoying tourists.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Kelly--I've only been there once to visit the uncle that lived there..so I don't remember much about it. I was younger. He owned a restaurant there..I forget the name..but I do know that Steve Spurrier (Gators former head coach..for those of you who might not know) used to dine there often..mostly after games.

Yeah..we are huge Gators fans. :)

message 61: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments Oh it's such a tourist town, but other than touristy stuff, there is absolutely NOTHING to do!

Oh man, the Gators got killed last night. People are wearing black today, no lie.

Natanya (vraisemble) | 255 comments Hello! My name is Natanya and I'm from the Seattle, WA area, but I'm currently a college freshman in NY, majoring in comparative literature and sociology. I love reading (and have since I learned how), though with all of my reading for school I don't read as many other books as I would like. I read a wide range of books, mostly fiction, but my favorite genre is dystopian fiction (I love Margaret Atwood).

message 64: by Alessia (new)

Alessia (allieonthemoon) Welcome Natanya from a another newbie :) Your major is really interesting, my boyfriend is taking his Ph.D in comparative literature and we always talk about what he studies (even if my field is completely different) and I love this kind of talks.

Welcome Natanya! We just got done reading The Handmaid's Tale for our last group read! I wasn't able to participate in that one but I have the book sitting on my shelf! What is your favorite by her?

message 66: by Natanya (new)

Natanya (vraisemble) | 255 comments Alessia -- I love comparative literature. Of course, I haven't even finished my first semester, but I ended up with a really amazing professor (whose class I will be taking next semester as well because I like her so much), so it's been really great so far.

Jamie -- The Handmaid's Tale is my favorite. :) I'm currently finishing an essay on Oryx & Crake, which I wasn't too crazy about the first time I read it (about a year ago), but I enjoyed it a lot more the second time around.

message 67: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Welcome to the group Natanya! So you're from Seattle, but you go to school in NY, that's pretty far away. What made you choose the University you go to?

message 68: by Natanya (last edited Dec 06, 2009 10:23PM) (new)

Natanya (vraisemble) | 255 comments My family is originally from NY (I was born in Virginia though, and moved to WA when I was 6), so I actually have a lot of extended family out here. I didn't originally want to go to school this far away (I was hoping for CA), but that's kind of how it worked out. If I didn't have family out here, I probably would not have come this far. I haven't been home since August, though, so I really miss it. But I only have a couple weeks left!

I had some friends in college who were in the same boat..they lived so far away that they couldn't really go home until the end of each semester. I always felt so bad for them. I definitely took being any hour away from home for granted until I realized some people couldn't even go home for Thanksgiving.

message 70: by Natanya (new)

Natanya (vraisemble) | 255 comments I'm glad, at least, that I had relatives to go to over thanksgiving...it would have been miserable to have stayed here the whole time. Though most people who couldn't go home still took the bus down to the city or went to visit friends in other places.

Yeah, I recall most of those people going to friends for the holidays who lived closer so that made me feel better!

message 72: by Linette (new)

Linette (moseleylinette) Hey everyone, I am new to the group, just joined. My name is Linette and I'm living in Boise, ID. I am going to Boise State right now but hope to transfer next year! I love love love to read and juggling it with school reading has been difficult, but I try to make it work! I am majoring in Social Work right now, but once I transfer I hope to major in a special combined degree of international relations, sociology, and anthropology for a future in overseas charity organization work. Hopefully I will get to join the Peace Corps once I graduate! I am excited to have a monthly book to read for the group & people to talk about them with :)

Hey Natanya, LOL I go to school in New York too and I'm from VA. Ha, I thought it was a cool coincidence so I thought I'd share.

Anyway, I'm not new to the group, but I don't know if I ever really introduced myself. Hi everyone, my name is Sarah Elizabeth. I'll be 20 in a couple of weeks, and I'm a second year college student studying English and Music in New York. I want to work in film when I graduate. I'm from Virginia, as I said. I love reading, writing, playing the piano, and spending long days in the city doing nothing but walking around and drinking starbucks. LOL

My two favorite books ever are both for kids: Ella Enchanted and Treasure Island. I'm also a huge Peter Pan fan, and I love pirate stories. Other favorites: The Great Gatsby, Wuthering Heights, Left to Tell, The Thirteenth Tale, and Bloody Jack.

message 84: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth I'm in the Bronx, and I'd just like to say that even though all five boroughs are part of NYC, Manhattan is the only one that writes "New York, NY" on its letters. All the rest of us are rejects, apparently.

message 87: by Jules (new)

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments Hi guys! I guess I should introduce myself as well...

My name's Jules (or at least that's what the English-speaking world calls me), I'm German, from Berlin, to be exact, and twenty years old. I've just started studying English and paedagogy (apparently no good translation of this term into English exists, meh) at Universität Potsdam (city close to Berlin, with amazing castles and grand parks and such). I've worked with children for two years before I started my degree, so that's probably where I'm going to go with this. English I study because I LOVE the language so much that I couldn't not do it, LOL.

In my freetime I read a lot (duh), write (English, not German), hang out on the internet, though I also have stretches where I don't look at the laptop much and just meet with my friends a lot. I love alcohol (mostly in moderation) :D I try to fly to London as often as possible because I've fallen in love with the city - my next trip is planned for January - and I really want to live there for a time. Though I must admit, Berlin is also a very exciting city - I wouldn't want to miss having grown up here. It's such a diverse and open place with so much history...

Um, I think I should stop here before I give you an essay on myself, which I don't suppose y'all want to read. I shall only mention that I'm excited to be here and let you carry on with your business ;)

message 88: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Welcome Jules! It sounds like you live in an amazing place! I'm envious that you get to see cool castles and stuff like that. I love castles, I have Eilean Donan as my desktop wall paper at the moment. I think that one is in Scotland.

message 89: by Alessia (new)

Thanks :) I don't really get to choose, but since I am studying spanish, I assume I'll be placed in South America or on a spanish-speaking island. Also, I am not really sure what made me want to join.. I just have wanted to since I heard about it as a little girl. Something about helping an entire community abroad sounds just amazing.

message 94: by Jules (new)

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments Kimberly: Ah, I think palace would have been the better word... I don't think Palais Sanssouci is quite the same as Eilean Donan - which I'd certainly prefer to have close to me! All those palaces in Potsdam are so pretentious.

Alessia, Jamie: Ha, don't get me started on talking about Berlin. I know some people who are... sort of patriotic about our city (Germans are not a patriotic people for the most part, see history, though that's been changing a bit since the football world cup in '06...). I live in the former GDR part of Berlin; I remember the time, about ten years ago, when the cars burned in my street on Labour Day (May 1). Now we sort of have the young wannabe-nouveau-riche stylish people living here :D So much change is going on all the time! No comparison at all to Munich, which seems more like a regional kind of town. It's much more conservative down there in the south for sure. /end ramble

Jamie, Tami, Heather: Do come! *g* Though I certainly wouldn't be an ideal guide since I'm a very very VERY shy person, LOL.

message 95: by Kallie (new)

Kallie | 42 comments I'm Kallie, I'm 21 and from New Hampshire. I'm finishing up my Bachelor's degree in Psych and graduating in May (at least that's the plan). I love music and I sing in several groups on campus and fill in at local churches. I work for a residential group home for troubled teens, and I absolutely love what I do. I'm planning to stay in the Seacoast area after graduation, and definitely plan to read a whole lot more once I don't have mandatory reading to do for school. Basically I guess I found my way to goodreads to get in touch with people that have some similar interests (and I loved the penpal idea, whoever thought that one up!), so hi everyone, I look forward to talking with as many of you as I can!

Alicia (kalypso) | 214 comments Hi everyone! I'm Alicia. I'm 24 and live in Southern CA. I graduated from Cal Poly SLO with a degree in civil engineering a few months ago.

I have loved to read since a very young age and rarely watch any TV. I also enjoy playing basketball, hiking (and pretty much anything else outdoors), listening to music, and hanging out with friends.

message 99: by Kallie (new)

Kallie | 42 comments That's awesome, Kim! I'm glad you enjoy it, music is such a passion of mine. I've done a bunch of different things..we performed Messiah last spring at school, and then we competed in the Czech Republic at the end of June. Our director is pretty intense so he throws all sorts of music at us. It's been quite the learning experience! How about you? What has your choir been up to?

message 100: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments We perform in a local Cathedral every Christmas. It's beautiful and the acoustics are incredible. This summer we are going on tour to Europe! Our director is pretty intense too; he finds some of the craziest songs. But the crazier the song, the more amazing we sound!
