You and three friends are about to embark on a perilous journey. You will be traveling by wagon from Independence, Missouri, to the Willamette Valley, Oregon. It is going to be a long, long 1,960-mile walk.

You will face wildlife, starvation, disease, thieves, severe weather, accidents, and worst of all, no libraries :)

But you can do it together with your companions. (I promise you will not die of dysentery.)

Team 12
Ela (Mouse333)
Mandy
Linda C
Christine

For Week 1 each team member will read for one (1) Supply Card.

Supply Cards
Medicine - read a book with "doctor" found in the text
Spare Parts - read a book that is in a series, but is NOT the first
Clothes - read a book with one fully clothed person on the cover
Clean Water - read a book that is set along a lake, sea, or ocean (50% of the time)
Food - read a book with double letters in a word in the title.

For Weeks 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10, you will be traveling. Each team member will read a book that will get you 70 miles along the trail.

To go 70 miles, read a book:
with the numbers 7 and 0 in the publication date - OR -
written by an author whose first, middle, or last initial can be found in MILES - OR -
with a title that begins with a letter found in THE OREGON TRAIL (you can use or ignore 'A', 'An', 'The')

For Weeks 4 and 7, you can read any 140+ page book you'd like.

First of all, pick a name for your family, group, or company.

Second, decide who will read for which Supply Card.

Third, decide who will make the team's Completion Posts. (It can be one person, or you can take turns. The team's Completion Post can be posted as soon as everyone has reported. The latest the team Completion Post can be posted is early Monday morning.)

Fourth, sit back and wait for Day One of the most incredible journey.

Upton | 243 comments Hey teammates! I am Christine and I am from Minnesota. I think is going to be fun. I am fine reading for any of the tasks.

message 5: by Ela (Mouse333) (new)

Ela (Mouse333) | 394 comments Hi! I'm Ela and I'm in the UK so it might take me longer to reply sometimes. I'm not good at coming up with team names - does anyone have any ideas? I can read for Medicine (it seems like something that could be useful for the journey), but I'm open to reading for the other tasks too.

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 567 comments Hi! My name is Linda and I am from Upstate NY on the shore of Lake Ontario. I have an enormous TBR pile, so I am good with any of the tasks.

For a name, we might try using our initials to form a family name
CLEM Family?
MELC Family?
CELM Family?
or not

Lady Travelers
Trail Blazers
Trailistas
Sandra Dallas had a book titled - Westering Women

Ha! I have a dog named Clem, short for Clementine. I am pretty easy going as far as name selection goes. I think you came up with some good ideas.

message 8: by Lanelle, Production Chief (new)

Lanelle | 20505 comments Mod
Christine, you should totally bring Clem along. Dogs were very useful to the pioneers. You guys could be Clem & Co.

(Sorry. Pay no attention to the moderator behind the curtain :)

Mandy Sickle (thereadingdiaries) | 1343 comments Hi I'm Mandy! This is my first time playing and I'm so excited this one sounds like fun. I'm In Las Vegas where it's been very cold perfect for reading weather.

I'm terrible at names but these are great choices.

message 10: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 567 comments This is also my first time playing this game. Christine, Ela, have either of you played this before? If so, any tips about how things go?

Ela (Mouse333) | 394 comments Linda C wrote: "This is also my first time playing this game. Christine, Ela, have either of you played this before? If so, any tips about how things go?"

I've never played this before either. I'm not sure if there have been previous rounds. I'm going to go with Medicine then. Does anyone have anything they really want to read that fits one of the other tasks? I think it will make it easier if we decide now what everyone is going for.

I like CLEM Family and Clem & Co for our team name.

message 12: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 567 comments CLEM Family sounds like a tight unit. CLEM & Co sounds like a group that can add others (people, animals) as the need arises. Does one concept or the other work better for our group? Thoughts?

I think I'd like to do Spare Parts. I have a lot of series started, so I can easily do that.

message 13: by Mandy (new)

Is there a doggy vaccination for Dysentery?

message 15: by Upton (new)

Upton | 243 comments I haven't played before; this might be a first-time game.

I like CLEM family and Clem & Co, either works for me.

I believe I have a book lined up that will work for the Food task if someone hasn't grabbed that one already. But I can read for any of the tasks needed.

message 16: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 567 comments I like Clem & Co for our name, but will go with majority.

So far we have:
Ela - Medicine
Linda - Spare Parts
Christine - Food
Mandy - ?

This is Week 1 of your journey West to Oregon. Each team member will read for a Supply Card. You need to decide which Supply Cards you want to begin your journey with, and who will read for which Card.

Calamities
Broken Arm (needs Medicine card)
Snake Bite (needs Medicine card)
Starvation (needs Food card)
Extreme Cold (needs Clothes card)
Bad Water (needs Clean Water card)
Broken Wheel (needs Spare Parts card)

Rules
You can't begin reading your book until Monday morning, 12:01 a.m. your time.
You must finish and report your book by Sunday night 11:59 p.m. your time.
Books must be 140 pages or more.
Audio books must be at least 3 hours long.
Graphic Novels must be at least 200 pages.

message 19: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 567 comments Mandy wrote: "I can do water. Now can we do more than one?"

This is the answer in the Q&A that I got when I asked that Q:

Each person will read for 1 Supply Card. That means your team/group/company won't be fully prepared for the calamities that will happen. I have made arrangements for a team to counteract the Calamity for the week if someone hasn't read for that particular Supply Card. Don't worry. It will make sense when you get the instructions for a Traveling/Calamity week.

message 20: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 567 comments We need to pick our name between CLEM family and Clem & Co. Everyone is trying to be so agreeable about going with the majority 😃 but we have to agree.
I picked Clem & Co as my choice (msg 16), but do not want to make the team decision. Choices?

We also have to select one player to post Completion Posts each week or we can have the last person to finish their book for the week make the post. The post has to be made before Midnight on each Sunday. I do not mind doing the posts unless someone else is interested or there is a desire to spread it around. Thoughts?

@Linda if it turns out you do the completion posts, I can be your backup. Otherwise, I don't mind taking a turn if it becomes monotonous.

I'm good with Clem & Co. And I agree with Christine, if you can't post for a certain week, I'm sure someone else will be available if you let us know.

message 23: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Sickle (thereadingdiaries) | 1343 comments I'm good with Clem & Co too. I'm happy to help with backup if need be too.

I'm sure once the first round hits it will make sense. I'm curious as I remember playing this as a kid on the computer.

message 24: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 567 comments OK, I'll do the Completion Posts. I will be on vacation for 2 weeks, but I will have my computer and should be able to do the posts. If it looks like a problem I'll let you know.

I'll let Lanelle know about our team name

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 567 comments This is first day of Week 2 - having never played this before I'm a little unsure of what's next. Message 2 says

I'm assuming that we pick and read books for this

You received the Broken Wheel Calamity Card.

Hopefully you will have earned the Supply Card that blocks this Calamity in Week 1.

If you don't have the Supply Card, one team member will need to read the task to counteract the Calamity. You will miss out on the 70 miles that that team member's book would add to the total mileage for that week.

Option 2 - a team member can read two (2) books during the week to make up the 70 miles that the person reading for the Supply Card will not accomplish. The two books must both meet the criteria for traveling the 70 miles.

Option 3 - two or more team members can 'buddy read' a book. The book must meet the criteria for traveling or the Supply Card for the Calamity. The one (1) book will counteract the Calamity and travel the necessary 70 miles.
